Patrick Trahan.
Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Tyrone Nix said he likes how Trahan has picked up the defensive schemes. The biggest challenge for the former Auburn player has been conditioning, as he did not train with Ole Miss in the summer.

The first replacement for Walker will be Lamar Brumfield, Nix said.

Powe's development
Many fans remained to the very end of the scrimmage, and a handful of those cheered defensive tackle Jerrell Powe through his wind sprints.

Powe continues to run with the third-team line. He hasn't looked bad, but he hasn't done anything spectacular either.

"He has a chance. He has a lot of ability, he just has to get the rust off," Nix said. "We take it one step at a time, day by day. He'll get a little better each day, and he'll be ready."

Secondary competition
One of the things the staff wanted to see in the scrimmage was how well the defensive backs would tackle.

"Early on I didn't think we tackled well at all, but as the scrimmage went on we became a more physical secondary," Nix said. "We started seeing some big hits.

"After we got going, and they got challenged, we started seeing improvement in the secondary."

Dustin Mouzon and Cassius Vaughn continue to run as the first team cornerbacks with Marshay Green and Jeremy McGee on the second team.

Mouzon had an interception, and a couple of freshman made nice plays, Jared Mitchell with a solid open-field tackle and Rudy Wilson with a big hit.
