– No defensive lineman who wasn’t hurt already got hurt today. Seems like that in itself is noteworthy.

It’s also noteworthy that, at least, the injured defensive starters seem to be making good progress.

Nose tackle Ted Laurent was doing some high-stepping with a sleeve on his right knee. Tackle Peria Jerry was moving around, and linebacker Allen Walker was jogging on the track as the Rebels practiced inside.

– With Jerry out, true freshman Justin Smith continues to run with the first team. “He doesn’t act like a freshman … the intensity, the focus. He doesn’t bust, he’s going to line up correctly,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said.

– Jerrell Powe and Jermey Parnell were running with the third group in defensive linemen agility drills today. We were ushered out shortly after that, as open practice is now limited to four periods.

Powe had a cast on his right wrist where it had been only taped. He had surgery on that wrist in the off-season. Nutt said the cast was just a precautionary measure.

– Kendrick Lewis was back at practice and was running first team free safety. He really appears to have a solid grip on the position with all the time Johnny Brown has lost with his hamstring injury. It’s incredible what trying to beat your cousin in a footrace can do for you. It was Brown who took the position from Lewis last season.

– The No. 1 defensive line today shaped up with Kentrell Lockett and Emmanuel Stephens and the ends, then Smith and Marcus Tillman at the down spots. The No. 2 line was made up of sophomore Lawon Scott and redshirt freshman Justin Sanders at the down spots and LaDerrick Vaughn and Garrett Ryan at the ends.
