Alright, maybe we can hire a coach that can do at OM what no one can do at any other SEC program. I just don't see any evidence of that. But maybe I'm wrong.

55chevy wrote:Some may fall out when I say this but AK isn't a terrible coach. He's been around the game long enough to know things about it and he is a average coach. The problem is he put's teams on the floor every year that have the same limitations and short comings. There are reasons this team isn't going to the NCAA tournament. They are the same reasons the last 8 out of 10 haven't gone. The number one reason is shot selection. OM thinks they can make one pass and shoot. It just doesn't happen like that. It isn't that easy. OM plays selfish on the offensive side of the ball. The players know that if they give the ball up it isn't coming back. They force things and make bad decisions on offense. There isn't one player willing to make the extra pass instead of shooting it. Not one player makes the others around them better. There is no "team" concept on offense, it is all one on one. There is no shortage of guards willing to come. Why wouldn't they want to come, they get to shoot it any time they want. This team right now can compete with any team in the nation. They shoot it, they rebound it and they have plenty of talent. The only thing lacking is style of play. Knowing how to play the game. This is where AK is lacking. His teams lack discipline and knowledge on how to play the game. They are also fundamentally weak and have the absolute worse half court game in the SEC. They win when they win because they can shoot the ball and have enough talent to compete. The SEC isn't the greatest league in the country and this helps also. Some times they are almost unwatchable, other times they play pretty well. I've said it before and I'll repeat it one more time. If you keep AK you are going to get exactly what you have already seen. He is going to put a team on the floor that is guard orientated. They are going to shoot it any time they want. They are going to win games but it will mostly be games against weak teams. They will always win close to twenty games because they are going to pick out eight to ten very winnable games. They will eventually get back to the NCAA tournament but it will be the exception. If you want the same he's the guy. He can continue doing what he's been doing. If you have higher expectations he cannot deliver it on a consistent basis. The NCAA tournament has 68 teams. We have failed to get into a 68 field tournament nine out of eleven years if we don't go this year. Before we start talking about how good he's doing lets let that sink in. 9 out of 11 year we haven't been able to make a 68 team field. It's time to accept reality. In basketball we are irrelevant. We average less than one game over .500 in conference play per year. That's about as average as it get's. We have a average program, if that's the plan we can keep doing exactly as we've been doing.
His style of play is good enough to come in and take a losing program and make a winner out of it instantly. Won a share of the west his first year with players that had had 4 straight losing seasons. We were so bad it was a battle to score over 60 points those last 4 years after Mark Duke left. And his style of play is good enough for him to be our coach NEXT year, [drops microphone and walks off].

I'm not sure why people don't think we can ever do better. We can do better than 2 tourneys in eleven years. I don't think, say, 4 tourney in 11 years is 'so much higher'.
So it's worth firing AK for two additional tourney appearances? Seems kinda crazy if we trade winning seasons for two more appearances. Then we are just like everyone else not named UK and UF. Inconsistent programs with flashes of success as opposed to sustained success. I just can't get a clear picture of a higher ceiling in basketball when it's currently higher than it's ever been. We've never had a run with this many wins. We've never been a program that finished in the top 6 of the SEC for six straight years. I like being a tough out that always has a chance to dance as opposed to being like AU or LSU or aTm or Bama or really any of the SEC teams that do exactly what we do now except win consistently.
So it's worth keeping him b/c he wins a bunch of game against competition that DOES NOT GET US IN THE TOURNEY.

Yes, I will trade Kennedy for 4 appearances vs. the 2 he has. Every day of my life. And twice in the afterlife. Ole Miss is more important to me than Andy Kennedy. I'm loyal to Ole Miss over any of our coaches.

That's just insane to me. I'd rather Ole Miss be a consistent winner than have flashes of success.

Success in college basketball is the tournament. So, IMO, I'm making a trade for more success.

You folks keep harping on all those wins. They don't mean jack b/c they aren't getting us in the tourney.

But, hey who cares about the tourney. Just get me those 20 wins, brotha.

I can see the tourney point. But I just do not believe Ole Miss basketball is capable of consistently making the tourney. I see no evidence in our basketball history to prove we can be consistent tourney players. Not even the Evans/Barnes era, which we had four losing SEC records in Evans six years and five losing SEC records in Barnes eight years by the way. AK has produced 6 straight non losing SEC records. At Ole Miss. The historicaly worst basketball program in the SEC and he's gone dancing twice. One less than Evans and Barnes combined. Now maybe there is something I don't see there, but it sure looks like AK is maxing the programs potential.

You know, maybe we should schedule about twenty games against weak, inferior teams and then when we play at or around .500 in conference we could get close to thirty wins. Of course, with no wins against decent teams we still will go to the NIT(yet again) but at least we would be able to say we won close to thirty games. Ak probably will be the coach next year(unfortunately) but we will also more than likely be a carbon copy of this year and years past. Plenty of ability and talent and clueless on how to play the game properly. The argument for keeping him because we may not improve is absurd and to think there is a ceiling at OM that has been reached and cannot be improved a upon is just as absurd. We know what we are getting if he stays. I guess we are content to be average with no desire to improve. I don't think anybody can look at his conference record and see anything but average.

With coaches like Lee Hunt, Ed Murphy and Rod Barnes of course we haven't set the world on fire. They were worse than what we have now. Rod Barnes was hired to be a SEC head coach and to my knowledge at the time he hadn't ever coached a game anywhere at any level. Rob Evans went to the NCAA tournament two times in six years and they were the two years before he left to take another job. Two out of six is better than two out of eleven even with liberal math. On a side note. Rod Barnes did take three teams to the NCAA tournament in his first four years which would have been with Rob Evans players for the most part. So if my math is correct and Wikipedia isn't crazy that would be five tournament appearances in six years. So to say nobody has done more than AAK simply isn't true. Rob Evans went to the tournament as many times as AAK and had the program in good shape and Rod Barnes went more after inheriting the program Evans vacated, he just couldn't sustain it.

What did it mean to win a share of the west at that time?

Also, when did .500 in conference and beating up on nobody's make anybody a "winner". To think we have a "winning" program is laughable. To think we are anything more than average is delusional.

Bruce Pearl. Barnes at UT. Howland at MState. Winning coaches with great resumes who cannot match AK's records. But hey, you guys will get your wish one day. AK will be gone and we will see what the next guy can do here. I hope I'm wrong and will gladly admit it if we are a regular tourney team with no losing records in the sec or overall. But I hope you guys will admit it if we fall off from where we are now.

Well, the way I look at it, basketball is the number 3 sport at Ole Miss plain and simple. Ole Miss had the opportunity to move the program to the next level, but refused to do so. When you compare Ole Miss to the rest of the SEC, which without KY and FL is one of the worst conferences in America, you aren't looking at the true picture. Michael White might not have come back to coach Ole Miss, but we will never know as our alum want AK and to wallow in their sorrow, but talk about a coach who has been the longest tenured basketball coach in Ole Miss history, therefore, he is the winningest coach in Ole Miss history...Duh! Took a brain surgeon to make that statement as if AK is something of a miracle. Ole Miss more than likely will miss the NIT this year. But wait a minute...AK has 3 - 4 star HS players coming in that will turn the program into a Final Four team. That is why AK normally recruits HS players...oh, I meant Juco players as they are a known commodity. And you can see his former players in the NBA, like..........surely there is one right?

Thank goodness for baseball this year!!!!!!

First of all, they will be in a the nit. We were a 2 seed going into the bama game. Again, they will be in the nit this year. He's the winningest coach because he's won more games PER YEAR, won more sec games PER YEAR, than anyone else. Never seen anyone say anything about a final 4, so u need to come up with something else. I'll back out and let u haters continue. So since AK got here, we quit putting players in the NBA?? Yea, right. He's brought in 2 of the 5 most prolific scorers in our history. Has brought in our all time rebounder, and brought in our all time shot blocker. Thought I'd point out a few facts.
