Jerry's is better than Cock of the Walk. But to the OP, welcome to MS. It's not the greatest state but it is a good place to raise a family. Lot of good schools around the Jackson area and such. Thirsty Thursdays at the Braves game is always a good time. Go to Lakeland or Renaissance for shopping. Stay away from County Line Rd as much as possible. The are west of I55 and east of Clinton is a black hole...one must never go there. You'll be harassed by USM fans for the Iowa logo thing. You will hear nothing but OM/MSU banter all year and will likely hate us both by the time football season is over lol

Why not Pearl? That is the first negative I have heard about the town, plus it is just a little closer (not that its that big of a deal) to where I'll be working. According to school rankings, Pearl is a very good district. Just wondering.

By the way, the move is official now, will be moving down in about 3 weeks. Just have to give my 2 weeks notice at my current location, and then I will be beginning the relocation, house hunting project. Excited and a bit nervous all at the same time.

Hawkeye, I have lived in Pearl for 25+ years, not sure where the negativity is coming from. The new outlet mall is planned to open in November of this year....They are predicting that traffic will increase when this occurs. Welcome to Mississippi!

I grew up in South Mississippi, but have been here for almost a decade. It's starting to feel like home.

Where to live?

Depends on where you'll work but with kids, I'd suggest Rankin County over Madison County. Preferably Northwest Rankin-Brandon school districts over Pearl. The taxes are slightly better on our side of the water. And I generally like it over here better. Others prefer Madison. Definitely stay out of Hinds county.

Where to eat?

Anywhere that's not a chain. Seriously, it's the South and people can cook down here. There are great restaurants not named O'Charley's, etc.

Where to play?

- Sports: M-Braves games are a blast! Tues = $1 dog night Thurs = $1 beer night, they have excellent mini ticket plans and always have family nights.
- Music: If you're into music, sign up for the Ardenland newsletter. Arden Bennett is doing this city a great service with the awesome shows he's bringing to Duling Hall and other venues.
- Church: There's one on every corner. From big (Pinelake) to small (Fondren Church), Catholic to Pentecostal. Hopefully you'll find the right home for your family.
- Water?: The Rez baby. Buy a boat, or at least a jet ski. And get wet. A little over an hour to the south, the Okatoma offers a great weekend float trip as well. I spend my summer's kayaking that little creek.
- Casinos: The Beau Rivage makes a great Honeymoon weekend with the wife. Philadelphia and Vicksburg are the closest to Jackson. I recommend the Choctaw casinos over Vicksburg. For the golf!
- History: Speaking of Vicksburg, and Natchez, and Corinth. History man! This is where they fought and died. Learn about your new home. Study the History and make up your own mind about why the Civil War was fought. I find it interesting to live in a place where you can so plainly see the effects of History on the modern culture. Not to derail into a political debate, but the New South meets the Old South in some unique ways.
- Beaches: The MS Gulf Coast is underrated. Yeah, the water is dirty from the mighty MS and the sand gnats are horrible, but theirs great food, fun, and it's ours. If bluer water is your thing..... coming from Iowa you've never been closer. Gulf Shores, AL - Pensacola, FL - etc. Have fun!
- Delta: One must travel HWY 61 at least once in their life to understand the Blues. Get the steak at Doe's. Thank me later.
- Hill Country: Spend at much time in NE MS as you can. It's like an entirely different state. Starts in Oxford and ends in Iuka.

I'm sure I missed a lot. But I love my state! Welcome. And feel free to ask questions.
