Another gorgeous day in Oxford saw the Rebels take the field for their 4th practice of the off-season. I don’t have as much to say today mostly because I got to practice late, but from what I saw it was another solid day of practice.
Marshay had another great day as a shut down corner. The more I see him the more I am impressed. I wish Marshay would have been at corner all four years instead of just the two seasons he will see there. On drills where the corner and the receiver go one on one Marshay picked off Jevan while covering Lucas and he continued with shut down coverage on Breaux. Marr and Vaughn both had good outings during this drill as well. Freshman QB Clayton Moore was all over the place over throwing and under throwing receivers. However this is to be expected as its only his 4th college practice of his career.
Jevan had an up and down day, he hit some great throws but overall I didn’t think he looked as sharp as he was Monday. One player that I thought had a much better day was Markeith Summers, he caught a few nice passes including a TD from Snead in pass skeleton. However Snead did miss a few guys, notably Hodge on a drag route and high to Summers on an out route. Whitehead looked good during pass skeleton as well and showed good coverage at times. Dexter continued to show great hands catching whatever was thrown his way. Rising Sophomore Nathan Stanley had a really great showing during pass skeleton and demonstrated patience as he checked down through his progression. One check down resulted in a compte pass to Devin Thomas, and the next play saw him checking down to Dexter for a nice gain, albeit maybe a little to early. Stanley continued to show confidence as he hit Hodge in traffic through a tight window. To round out pass skeleton A. Harris and Summers had nice catches. Summers continued to show improvement from Monday, he seemed to have more swagger and confidence.
Coach Nutt decided to spend some time working on the wild Rebel today as McCluster, and Bolden took snaps from the shotgun. The plays varied in success but most of them went for better than 5 yards. The Rebels spent a good 15 minutes going through reps in the Wild Rebel before calling the troops together for the scrimmage.
Before the entire Defense got up there for scrimmage the offense was working on some screens and it certainly paid off as McCluster took an inside screen for a good 25 yards during scrimmage. Stanley continued to show off in scrimmage as he hit Ferbia Allen off of a play action roll out. On the next play Stanley went yard connecting with A. Harris who completely burnt the DB. Later in the scrimmage the Wild Rebel paid off as McCluster took a sweep to the right for a TD. This kid has obviously gained weight but hasn’t lost any of that break away speed.
Coach Nutt moved the ball up to the 10 yard line to get some red zone work in but Cornell wasn’t having any of it as he stayed at home on a misdirection pitch and laid a hard hit on the RB who gained less than 3 yards. In the red zone Stanley showed some maturity as he audibled to a jump ball in the corner, but Derrick Herman made a great defensive play and nearly picked the ball off. The scrimmage ended as Cassius Vaughn picked Stanley in the end zone. The pick was a little deceiving as the walk on receiver didn’t exactly look for the ball... nonetheless it was a good pick in a pressure situation by Vaughn.
A few notes: Jevan Snead had to attend class so the snaps during scrimmage went to Stanley and Tapp. I thought Stanley had a much better day today as he continued to show touch with his deep ball, but was able to settle down and throw some nice passes within the 10-15 yard range. Stanley in my mind is the clear 2nd string QB right now with Tapp rounding out the 3rd string spot. I put Stanley in this position because I believe he is able to win games for us where as Tapp is good ay managing games but im not sure he could go out and win us a ball game. Brandon is the obvious number one tail back right now but I cant say enough good things about Enrique Davis. He showed a lot of patience today waiting behind blocks and accelerating through open creases. He not only showed patience but had great moves which allowed him to get outside where he showed good speed and was able to get to the end zones 2 to 3 time this afternoon. He also wasn’t afraid to lower his shoulder and his the hole hard. The team is coming along well although I admit I haven’t spent much time watching the Defensive of Offensive line. At the rate the RS freshman DB’s are progressing the only position im worried about is quality depth on the offensive line.

don't question my knowledge
Our group of running backs is nasty this year. I expect big improvement from Enrique, but Bolden and Eason should be nasty too.
Also, it sounds like Devin Thomas and Andre Sterling are looking good. There is no way any of the freshman backs will have a chance at not redshirting. Wish I could say the same for O-line.

JD Lawhorn? I really think he could add to the depth at wide reciever. Also, Josh Lancaster. He might be a little undersized, but you can't underestimate his heart.hottytoddyrebel wrote:If there are any players yall want me to keep an eye on let me know.
Finally, how is Bryan Powers looking in the kicking game? I still think he was a solid signee by Ed O and he's just a swell guy. I do love me some flat bill hats.
Any reports you can get on the O-line would be awesome. I"m especially interested in how Sowell, Neely, and Rishaw are doing? Thanks for the detailed reports. I've been looking forward to them after each practice. Wish I could attend myself.

Sowell has a ways to go. Rishaw hasn't looked too bad. He is very physical, but has some work to do on technique and instinct.Charles wrote:Any reports you can get on the O-line would be awesome. I think Sowell will pull it together eventually, but the two practices I have gone to he has not exactly received his praise from Markuson.
