I need personal opinions, who's fault is it?

I'm just curious about something.....When I think back to the "forgotten" years of olemiss football from 04-07 i can't help but wonder who's to blame? We could say cutcliffe only because it just seemed like he didn't prepare to have a good back up plan after eli left, heck that 04 season (we went 4-8) seemed like we had a eli hangover and he just didn't recruit the type of qb that we needed to be successful. Or then again we could blame orgeron. But look at who hired him in the first place. Orgeron only succeeded in bringing top notch recruits in. He was a horrible coach. So this brings me back to the original question, in your opinion, who's fault was it that is took us 4 losing seasons to finally bring a winner into the program?
One thing I noticed was a graduation rates from that 03-04 time frame and that had OM near the top at 62% Vanderbilt was a little higher and one other program within the SEC, maybe GA or FL, I don't remember. It would seem on the surface that Cut was trying to recruit a player who could graduate but you have to balance that with enough kids that are gonna blow it off for the NFL too or it's hard to compete. I also noticed Cut loaded some classes with a ton of MS talent when he probabaly could have branched into other SEC states more and did a little better like Nutt is doing. I made a statement I thought Nutt should have recruited MS better last year but now I'm not so sure.jrebel87 wrote:I'm just curious about something.....When I think back to the "forgotten" years of olemiss football from 04-07 i can't help but wonder who's to blame? It is odd looking at OM 2004 season and seeing a loss to Memphis and Wyoming so yea the downfall started with Cut. Oregeron might have been a poor coach but you have to understand there's only a small number of coaches that you could plug into your program like Nutt , or Saban or Meyer, or Stoops, and know without a doubt you're going to get the max potential out of the program. There are not many of those guys out there looking for a lower to mid tier SEC job. Saban has stated he would only coach at a place with high expectations. It seems like Boone's focus was making sure a good recruiter was hired after Cutcliff and that's what he got. Now you've got a coach who still has alot to prove and he's one of the best, and he's been to that sec title game more than once in a little mountainous hillbilly town in a state that much harder to recruit to than Oxford.
My understanding was that we had Dennis Erikson in the bag...and then somebody decided to hire O.
Why?
$$$$$$...pure and simple.
fis, I think you're giving Boone benefit of the doubt that he doesn't deserve. One thing I think you might not understand about Boone is that he is a former banker...so it's all about the almighty dollar to him. He is a bean counter who runs our athletic department like a bank, and that is the nature of who he is. When he saw O, I guarantee you he didn't see a good recruiter. He saw a cheap hire that would help him keep the football program in the black financially...everything else (including winning) was secondary. I honestly think at times that if our athletic programs could loose but still stay in the black (which we all know is an impossibility) that he couldn't really care less.

to be honest with you I think that is how most Ad's view it. STay in the black, and all else is secondary; keep filling the stadium or close to it and keep fans interestedSasquatch wrote:My understanding was that we had Dennis Erikson in the bag...and then somebody decided to hire O.

When I go research anything "David Cutcliff firing", what I see is he was fired for the perceived recruiting downfall. When you look at in his sixth season he lost to Memphis at home and Wyoming and look at some of the programs those 2 programs lost to that year, that is pretty good evidence recruiting slipped. Hell those games should have been won with a 4th team QB if need be at that point in his tenure. Nutt was never coming close to losing to nonbcs schools by his 6th year.
Who do you think OM could have or should have hired instead of O? I can tell you this; Arkansas was going to hire Will Muschamp had Petrino not left the falcons when he did. Ark had Jim Grobe (wake) Bowden (clemson) and Tuberville all say no. Also, I think most good coaches will get a good idea prior to taking a job what type of talent situation they are inheriting on and off the field. If a coach had the idea Cut left the cupboard bare it probably would have been next to impossible to hire a proven guy to come rebuild and lose for 2 or 3 years. So the next best thing was to hire the national recruiter of the year and worry about winning later. Another thing; even if you could have hired someone the caliber of Danny ford, or Steve spurrier (examples) there is no gaurantee they would have been in it for any more than just the money and the hell of it b/c they already had their day in the sun. In the Petrino case, that was an example of a coach wanting to escape a bad NFL situation but even then with all the negative online publicity with Petrino I don't think we can consider this the same Petrino that won the mighty big east in 06. I think he can be easily recruited against and I think any success is going to come with wonder where he'll coach next.
Trust me on this; the hell you went through from 04 to 07 was well worth the success you are about to have with this tremendous Houston Nutt b/c he still has a fire in him and he's one of the best EVER.
The best ever? What are you supporting that statement with? His record of BCS games or conference championships? Be a little realistic in your comments.fis wrote:to be honest with you I think that is how most Ad's view it. his over all conference record b/c Arkansas is the eqivolent to Kentucky in football in terms of potential. Go ahead and mark it down. Arkansas won't ever have another coach sustain a winning career conference record at Arkansas in the SEC, or win or tie for the SEC-w 3 times in 10 years either.toldu wrote:The best ever? The bcs and conference championship stuff is irrelevant b/c when you are 9th in terms of potential in a conference of 12 teams it is an unrealistic measuring tool.
