Well, we know of three very poor thieves that have been recruited for Tennessee under his watch... He was good at getting some big name recruits to sign at Ole Miss but unfortunately, many of those recruits either never qualified, dropped out of school after their scholarship was awarded or underperformed.Slick Rick wrote:Slick Rick Says, Coach O has had some success in recruiting at UT. Two Ole miss players talk about playing against Coach O

Unless you are more interested in February on paper victories than fall on field victories (see: Ed Orgeron), I think it is useless to grade recruiting classes until at least two years later. I like what I have seen of Nutt's recruits so far. Only time will tell.classof97 wrote:My eyes have been opened! It seemed like he was recruiting better classes than that while living it. According to ESPN, his 2006 Class 14 overall, 5th SEC.... but your right Coach "O" s classes were average to below average. While Coach Nutt's 2 classes have been worse than Coach O's so far.john_avery_fast wrote:Do you even have a clue? O's highest ranked class was 16th overall and 6th in the SEC. which is by definition average in the SEC. His other classes: 2005 was 30th and 9th and 2007 was 27th and 8th.classof97 wrote:Coach O's classes usually ranked 2 or 3 in the SEC, but he couldn't coach worth a crap as you and others have pointed out.
I guess if we give Coach O a C- in recruiting, we can give Coach Nutt a solid D.
of recruiting classes are based primarily on how many five and four start recruits you get. Orgeron's numbers were helped by the fact that he would always convince a couple of big name players to come. Unfortunately, he didn't look at our actual needs and try to fill them. Yes, you get two or three five stars and your ranking will go up. If in doing so-- that is in concentrating your efforts on a few big name players-- you fail to get enough decent offensive linemen or defensive secondary players, then you will find yourself with the depth issues we have. Coach Nutt appears, to me, to be better at looking at our needs and filling them. Orgeron got some five star players who are or have contributed (Powe, Jerry and Oher) but he also got some who have been big busts and some who never even saw the field. Obviously, not every touted recruit is going to be as good as hoped, but unless you are Alabama and can fill your recruiting class with five stars, you need to look at your weak areas today, next year and the year after and fill those spots with the best you can find. Devoting all your efforts to recruiting a few big name recruits to boost your ranking while ignoring some actual needs is not a way to build a team and we are seeing that every Saturday. Now we have to work with three less scholarchips due to Orgeron's recruiting and I'd definitely grade Nutt's approach well above O's.

Good points! Recruiting class rankings are based on HS stats, and usually there is not much of a correlation anyway.
