Think the 3rd year is "The Year" to find out what you have in a coach. By then, the previous regime's experienced players are gone and the new hc's first 2 classes are maturing. What players that have been left over have a couple of years in the new hc's system (so they are basically the new hc's players).
One thing about every situation, they are all different. At Ark, the table should be set for next season. But that's the way the cards fell with the transfers, left over players and how he recruited.
On paper, OM may take a small step back next season. You don't replace a dex, period. But, all that means is that someone else will have an opportunity to step up.
Nutt inherited a lot of experience and some key transfers to make his first 2 years a lot different than Petrino's (Using those examples cause most people on this board seem to know a lot about the teams but, you can always use Weiss or even Mullen if you want to compare other situations). Nutt had a team that could win more right away and he has.
I'll say this about any coach. By their 3rd and 4th years, you know what you got in them. It's their players, staff's and systems. By then, there aren't a lot of reasons as to why a coach isn't meeting the universitiy's standards imo.
Nutt's not going to go 1-11 next season, I also don't see a scenario where OM wins the West (neither do I see Ark winning the West next year). But, that doesn't mean OM can't stay on their current pace. But, I do think both schools will know by this time next year who they have in a Head Coach at that particular school. What you've done in the past is irrelevant Steve Spurrier, it's what you are doing and where you are visibly going. That's why life in the SEC is so difficult. Just ask Mark Richt.
You will see the true Houston Nutt next year.

Here's the thing(s):
- When Nutt first came, not many people knew that Ole Miss had the talent. It was all a mystery. "All those recruiting rankings means nothing if you can't #1-coach it and #2-those talented players don't transition into college playmakers." This is what we heard....recruiting ranking meant nothing. We were picked dead freaking last!! We won 9 games, beat LSU, Florida, etc, and won the Cotton bowl/New Year's Day bowl.
-then, it was said, "Nutt can't coach, he can't coach with expectations, Ole miss will NOT be overlooked this year." Then, the Rebs go out and win 9 again, Cotton Bowl Champs.....AGAIN, New Year's Bowl AGAIN.....beat LSU, UT, Arkie, etc......and this year we're not near as happy; rightfully so. BUT, Coach Nutt has done his job and deserves to be left alone by ALL.
Going forward: 1-Nutt has proven his tendencies to FIND a way to win. 2-We will not be pre-season ranked next year; which makes for a team with something to prove. 3-The mental aspect of football at Ole Miss is NOW changed forever. We expect to win. 4- Recruiting is in great hands.
Will we win them all? No but, we will be back in a bowl game next year and either be 8-4 or 7-5 in what is to be called a rebuilding year...fine by me, for now. Then, a new flock of go-to guys and stars will arise.....then, we will be mentioned again in the SEC race conversation once again. This is not a sprint; its a marathon....and we're off to a great start. Hotty Toddy!!!!!

I always enjoyed watching Arkansas and always traveled to Little Rock as a kid to watch the Ole Miss vs Arkansas game, but I would not dare to make the drive to Fayetteville that is just too darn far of a drive from anywhere in the Southeast Conference!
I can say I am happy that I have something to look forward to -like a fall from two 9 win seasons bc Nutt a) can't recruit (as far as recruiting rankings and an ex-high school linebacker arm-chair qbs are concerned or adults who never played football) b) ruins qb's (like Snead playing scared and can't make more than one read bc Nutt is playing Chuck Norris' mind games with him) c) likes to text (personal issues is not my concern) d) doesn't give into spoiled pre-madona qb's and a self serving high school coach who is out for number 1 (yeah give the keys to the program to a couple of freshmen and a 1st year college coach) e) is too enthusiastic and optomistic (happy people sux) f) points out plays and lack of player discipline after losses (can't have that when asked a question about a player you must always say the play of teenagers lays squarely on my shoulders bc you know it is always the coach's fault that teenagers don't follow their assignments? ) g) uses other schools offers as leverage to get things for himself or his football program (darn free market society how could someone be such a shameless self promoter).
I don't think Nutt left Arkansas until the situation was such that there was no other choice. Good luck Arkansas I hope you get everything you are looking for like the fact that one day you might be able to tell Ole Miss fans I told you so because I am the greatest arm-chair quarterback in Arkansas' history and I am the ultimate judge of character and coaching ability! Records and key wins don't mean anything only passing the ball more. Well you have gotten what you were looking for! So go back to Hogville and discuss amongst your peers how bad HDN screwed Arkansas.

The bottom line is that there's not a single shred of evidence from Houston Nutt's 2 years at Ole Miss to substantiate any of the claims they've made about him.
But let's just "wait 'till next year"...sheesh. :argue:

Wasn't that supposed to happen the last TWO times we played y'all? Yeah, thought so.RazorbackinBenton wrote:
Next year in Fayetteville your football team will get ran out of the stadium and he will start blaming the players and not take any blame himself. He is a master of taking all the glory and pointing fingers when things don't go right. All the good recruits in Mississippi will end up in Starkville very soon and the downward spiral will have begun.

You just got me ready for spring football!
This statement here is unfounded and incorrect. One of the few arguments some share on this board that irk me a bit. There's not a true, educated fan that has said "we need to sacrifice wins but pass the ball more".StrongRebel wrote:

We were basically saying the same things OM is saying now after looking back at this season. A better/more consistent passing game and we could've done something really cool. And I am not even trying to correlate that to a Nutt. It's the same thing MSU is saying and UGA is saying that "if our defense was just average". Any of these schools find themselves saying this 3-4 years in a row, that's usually when changes need to be made of some sort imo.
Ark got what they needed out this season, OM apparently got what they needed (know you guys desired more). But, that's what has happened. The off season will bring new hope and opportunity for change. Let's bring it on
the change I'd like to see is no more 'we hate Nutt-Nutt sucks-Nutt cant coach-Nutt cant recruit-cant wait to say we told you' so posts on this board. the one note hog show is so old it qualifies for the Golden Age retirement home.

And, the last thing I'm going to add that shows a huge difference in "Ole Miss Nutt" and "Arkie Nutt"......his two coordinators. 1- Austin was an SEC QB, and a great one. He was a Head Coach in the pass-happy/offensive-minded CFL....and the man CAN develop freaking QB's. Plus, he's so happy to be home at Ole Miss and loves working with Nutt. 2-Nix is an aggressive, great defensive coordinator with SEC experience and an awesome attitude. He took this gig to get home to Mississippi and is happy to be working with Nutt.
These are two main factors that make Ole Miss Nutt > Arkie Nutt. Its just two totally different beasts altogether. Hotty Toddy!!!!
I think his Bowl record here already shows that the programs and situations are night and day.
As for him just coaching "Eddie's boys" 1) They d*** sure needed some coaching and 2) outside of Dex I think that HDN's recruits were as much a part of our success this year as Orgeron's. As a matter of fact the one glaring weakness on our team was directly related to an Orgeron recruit.

I agree with this totally. Nutt has much better coordinators at OM then he did at Ark (with the exception of having Gus in 06). Now, one could argue why Nutt never had/was able to bring in good coordinators at Ark.ThunderReb wrote:Exactly!bleuwolfe wrote:the change I'd like to see is no more 'we hate Nutt-Nutt sucks-Nutt cant coach-Nutt cant recruit-cant wait to say we told you' so posts on this board. the one note hog show is so old it qualifies for the Golden Age retirement home.

You can tell Austin is good at what he does and visually see his handprint on the offense. I don't think Nix is the best DC in the world, he is far better than anyone we had at Ark.
The head coach needs help. He needs good coordinators that will recruit and coach well. Unfortunately, we never had strong coordinators at Ark. OM seemingly has some strong ones now and it's paying off.
The next largest factor as to why Nutt is different now is the AD. Broyles ran things here at Ark and made Nutt change a lot of things. Nutt was never allowed to run the program the way he really wanted too IMO. If a coach is going to sink or swim, he's got to do it his way. Nutt seems to be more free and doing better.

That's pretty cool. I didn't know folks down there were scared of anything but the Honey Island swamp monster.
