Have a question: How long before our offense finds a rythm?
Moderator: Rebel Security
I just have a general question for everyone on this board. Its no secret that we have a young offense this season and I want to know what everyones opinion is on how many games you think it will take before our offense gets as good as it can with these players this season. I'm sure we may be a little rusty when the season starts because we have to test the waters and find out who's going to step up for us. What is your thought on this?
Should develop some early rhythm in those first couple of games. Vandy is expected to have a decent defense this year so, that could be the first true test. With any inexperienced offense, a few key things would go a long way. Good oline play, running game and field position. OM should be able to get good field postion with that defense and they should be able to run the ball those first couple of games at will.jrebel87 wrote:I just have a general question for everyone on this board. Percentages say that OM offense will be hit and miss this year. Here one game and not the next. It was pretty much that way last year with an experienced qb ( i know, he struggled mightly bad a lot of games) and one of the nations top 5 playmakers. OM has a really difficult schedule after Sept. Going to make it difficult.
All depends on how good the run game is. If the run game is as dead as ever. Maybe even just ok. Then I think it will be a while before we see some good clicking on in games. But if we can run the ball. Create some easy passes with it. Then I think we can find a good smooth sailing ship down the stretch.

Game one, quarter one.....minute and a half in......
Personally I believe that this is the first year that we will see a traditional Housten Nutt offense. The past 2 seasons we had a offense that wasn't quite the same as the run first offense coach Nutt had at Arkansas. This year, with a unproven qb under center, I think that changes. We will have to run the ball more until Stanley (or whoever) gets his rythm right. Hopefully since the first few games should be easy we can get our run game down and get stanley confident in his abilities to lead this offense. Your thoughts?

When did our offense find a "rythm" and stay in it last year? We play Jacksonville State week 1. If we cant find a rythm against them we are in trouble.. This is football, the "rythm" will change based on who we play.. Agree with the post above, this offense will be based on running the football. If we cant run, we are in trouble. If we run the ball, play solid d (field position football), we will be a 6 or 7 win team.. 8 wins would be a great season...

if a couple of our RB step it up - talking 2 u BB and Rico - then we will find our passing game + Wild Rebel must be explosive on ocassion, and oline continue to improve (fingers crossed)..D must rock in every game (not take a walk about ie msu) or we're in even bigger trouble.
think we're good for 7 8)
hoping for 8

9 or better only a dream

I don't care if we go undefeated (of course I don't..that sounds stupid), if we aren't still getting better the week we play MSU, we quit learning/working somewhere.

I think it will find some sort of rythem in the first game.
Some posters are right though. This offense the last couple of years has sort of been geared for a 50/50 balance. Which basically means the pass is spent as much time practicing as the run. Nutt has been forced to do that b/c the offensive linemen and qb he had was recruited for a pass-first philosphy. Nutt is a run first coach, similar to Saban. Now that Nutt knows he has to establish the run and not hurt some prissy prima donna quarterback's ego, the run game and run blocking should be more emphasized and better this year than the past 2. The pass game will come along but when you need to connect against Alabama or Lsu, my money is on it not being there then those razorback experts will be around saying "I told you so" well unless they are in the midst of another 7-5. But that's ok considering the circumstances. Nutt was in this situation in 06. Young QB, no experience, young center, young gaurds. he was expected to do nothing but brought back a decent front 7, decent set of offensive tackles, and 2 super star backs. I can see the backs on campus that can carry the load if E. Davis or Rodney Scott step up. He needs one real reliable possession receiver like he had in 6'6 marcus monk in 06. If someone could step up there and you get something out of the TE posistion and a deep threat, this team should contend for the 2nd in the west. He won't have a lock down corner as good as the guy he had in 06, a 2nd round pick that year, but overall the defense should be better than what he had that year.

Stanley throws an impressive ball and I think that Jevan's unimpressive season, last year, has taken some of the pressure off of him. He doesn't have to be perfect to live up to Jevan. The experience Stanley got in a few games should make him calmer when the season starts. He's going against an awesome defensive front in practice. I think he's gonna come out ready.
That being said, Houston Nutt's teams are known for overachieving when there's no preseason hype. I think we are all gonna be surprised how well we do this year. There may be too many close ones, but our D will take allot of pressure off this offense. I'm thinking we'll make a push for the west...may not win it, but should be close.

Forgot to include that in 06', Nutt had in his back pocket: Mcfadden, Jones, Hillis and Michael Smith. Those 4 backs will help out any qbdelusionalthug wrote:I think it will find some sort of rythem in the first game.

As long as Stanley/Cotton/Mackey do no try to emulate JS's penchant for gift giving, I'll be happy. My nerves couldn't handle another early Xmas every other sa (unless we're on the receiving end of course 8) ...2 more months, sigh..REBEL13 wrote:Stanley throws an impressive ball and I think that Jevan's unimpressive season, last year, has taken some of the pressure off of him. Right but he has the backs with the potential. In 06, it wasn't so much dmac ,jones , hillis, as much as the defense. Had those 3 never came to campus, Nutt still would have been near the top of the league in rushing with someone else, he always is, and he most likely will be this year b/c of his emphasis on it. You noticed in 07 he lost alot of defense from 06, Keith Jackson, Jamaal Anderson, Olajubutu and the corner who's name escapes me that went 32nd to the falcons. the quality of win/loss went down even though he had the same offense, and the offense was better in most statistical categories except fumbles lost ; 6 in 06, 15 in 07.spudhog wrote:Forgot to include that in 06', Nutt had in his back pocket: Mcfadden, Jones, Hillis and Michael Smith.
