I am just coming back to this board after a hiatus that has lasted far too long due to some pretty difficult times, so bear with me if I am touching on things that have already been mentioned here.
It seems to me (and what seems to be the general consensus on this board) that Nutt, Lee, Nix and the like, in addition to Boone, need to be shown the door.
That said, and again, I'm really sorry if I am beating the proverbial dead horse, but who do we get?
I did see some talk amongst the Rebel Faithful that suggested Archie as a temporary interim AD, and though I like that ALOT, I am with some that would say that he is enjoying his "golden years" watching his boys play in the NFL and doing his spots on CBS too much to come in and try to turn around the debacle that is Ole Miss football.
So, who's the next candidate?
I got no clue.
As for new potential head coaches, given the size of our school, finances, etc, do we not need to look to be thinking "outside the box"? All of us would love to land Urban Meyer, but that is not going down in Oxford.
I might be the biggest moron in the history of the world, but I like options that would include Mike Leach, Paul Johnson, and honestly, my favorite candidate for what he has done and what you could get him for is Rich Rodriguez.
"Rich Rod" won at Tulane. Tulane.
He also won at West Virginia. West-fer-friggin-ginia.
For fear of touching on a subject that might have been discussed to death here, I'll stop now and would love to hear you all's thoughts on the subject. If not, I get it. I'm back to "rookie" status, and will take my lumps accordingly.

Welcome back. I always enjoyed your posts. I'm with you, we will have to go outside the box if we want to be a consistent bowl program. I like Johnson, Leach and Rich Rod. All are winners and all can routinely beat Vandy.
Foward Rebels! March to Fame!
Welcome back. If there are serious enough boosters and donors there's no reason we couldn't land Urban Meyer in a post Pete Boone environment. But I agree, the likelihood is next to none.
That said, let's steal Paul Johnson. I don't want Leach anywhere near the grove.

I don't think rich rod or Johnson could win in this league with their offenses. On game day I would love Leach, but I think off the field he would be a train wreck at Ole Miss.
My gut tells me we should give Kent Austin the shot. He understands Ole Miss. He understands quarterbacks. He knows what it is to win a championship as a player and as a coach. And when he is successful he won't be looking for greener pastures. I really think he would fit for us much like Gundy has fit for Oklahoma State.

I heard a stat the other day about Paul Johnson coached teams... Paul Johnson coached teams lose about 85% percent of the time a team has a bye week before they play them... The SEC is too athletic to run that. I like Leach but I like him as an OC. Why dont we pull a Florida and get a defensive minded coach that is up and coming like a Manny Diaz type; make Leach the OC with a salary around 1.5 Mil.. Sure he would jump ship when a head gig became available but if we could keep him a year or two to get back in the saddle I am all for it.
Butch Davis, so what if he was fired cause his dumb assistants could do right. THe guy can flat out coach and recruitt. The Canes of the 2000s and North Carolina is filled with SEC talent right now. So why not, he would probably love to coach anywhere now, why not the SEC.
Pain Dont HURT!
Your exactly right. Johson's offense (as much as I love to watch it) is very ineffective when you have more than a normal week to prepare. Rich Rod obviously had talent at Mich but wasn't coaching that well cause look what his replacement is doing.MageeRebel425 wrote:mpzreb17 wrote:Welcome back. Leach wouldn't win well in the SEC now. Ark has a good pass Def, Bama/LSU are too nasty for his offenses.
Sec is a different animal, especially the West. You can't afford to take "risks" and go with guys you "hope" can do the job. Which makes it the toughest division in sports.
Wasn't Bobby a bit of a risk, for all intents and purposes?spudhog wrote:Your exactly right. Thanks Chucky and MPZ for your welcome back commentary, I appreciate it totally.
Reb Chuck, I hear you on Austin, I do. However, does the fact that we have attempted to give up the job to possible up and comers in the past just to have it blow up in our face bother you some? I think that maybe he has something to give for all the reasons that you have posted, but to me, it is such a high risk to give him the head job after being so green to the position. I know that he has had tons of success in Canada, but it's Canada where Alabama could defeat the Grey Cup winner 9 of 10 times. I don't know what his record is at Cornell, but, even if it's good, it's Cornell. And what's more, I like Kent Austin, in 1986 when he beat LSU, I was there and elated, but if he comes to Ole Miss and is a failure, he will be chastised and a cast-off of sorts in a town that loved him prior. I just don't want to see that happen, not now.
As for the comments about Johnson, Leach, and Rich Rod being all guys with gimmicky offenses, far be it for me to argue that, but, the way I see the current situation at Ole Miss (financially), if we're gonna start over at head coach, we're already a bit behind the eight ball. As someone here already said, Petrino was the same sort of gamble, and it seems to be paying some dividends.
The stat about Johnson losing to teams that have the luxury of a bye is a stat that is thrown around quite a bit here in Atlanta, and I must admit, is a bit scary, but, hey, the guy won a championship at GSU, was more successful than most might have thought at Navy, and has been pretty darn good at GT, namely this season, when most experts had them out of contention before the season began.
Leach and Rich Rod both took teams that were dismal (Tulane, West Virginia) to mediocre (Texas Tech) to heights that those respective schools would not have predicted seeing.
I also very much realize that the defensive side of the ball must be addressed in this equation, but the head men listed above won, and won, and won. Surely they have a good idea of who to put in place to cover that.
Hell, again, if I were to be the captain of this ship, I'd hire Meyer, Saban, Brown, etc, but I just do not believe, even with Boone gone, the leadership at Ole Miss are gonna pony up that strongly.

Not convinced Austin's D would be tough enough. But he could hire someone into it, right?

With regard to Austin being a risk I don't think we will be looking at anybody who has actually won at the sec level. I do think that winners know how to be winners whether it be in the CFL or Big 12, etc. So I don't necessarily see Austin as a higher risk than a coach from another non SEC conference. And we kind of know what kind of offensive coach Austin would be. He would need a good defensive coordinator as would many of the folks mentioned. But I do trust that he would be able to develop qbs and I believe he could help to unify us because he is one of us. That alone is no reason to hire him but it sure as heck doesn't hurt.OMNOB 1A wrote:Thanks Chucky and MPZ for your welcome back commentary, I appreciate it totally.
