I appreciate your heart as well as who and what Archie is. The man is legend. Nobody is saying anything derogatory about the man. Granted Cut did catapult both of Archie's boys into the NFL, but (and here is the issue), he should have recognized that Cut was in over his head and nothing more than a great OC when he has above average talent. That really sticks in the back of peoples' minds.
the folks upset about Archie's involvement are those who care more about the mascot than the game...period. They think he has abandoned the cause.
I agree this about the mascot and From what I I I understand is that Archie was sideways with boone and did not like him. Archie got his son on the most profitable NFL team after he was drafted by a team in a poor market. He handled that in the best interest for his son and I would think he will handle this in the best interest for ole miss

One (of the many I'm sure) thing that did slip by me was this. Can you imagine... "Honey, telephone, it's Archie Manning"... Now who is not going to answer that call and listen intently?

Apparently we had the money for a buyout...

In retrospect he was right about Cut, at least as it regards the timing of the dismissal...the timing is what started us on this Orgeron/Nutt train to oblivion. And that guy that was in "over his head" still delivered our only 10 win season in the last 40 plus years. There is actually nobody associated with Ole Miss that we should trust more with this than Archie. When we have needed money he has spearheaded efforts and delivered. When we needed a quarterback to lead us as close to Atlanta as we have been his family delivered. I ask again, if not Archie, then who? Unless you have a better choice to bring to the table then your protestations will fall on deaf ears.

I was upset with cut for sure at the time but as I see we cannot get a qb to save ou lives I wish we had someone who has worked with the mannings and could bring in more greats... He was a poor recruiter and that's what killed him.. Not to mention post Eli the year of 3 and long runs up the middle

I agree with some of this.

But, as much as I love Archie and his entire family, what is it on his resume that screams knowledge of college football today?

To me, the last thing we need at Ole Miss, is an "Ole Miss" anybody.

You ask if not Archie, than who? I would reply that ultimately I have no idea because my job does not have a thing to do with running a FBS program in the SEC, therefore I have no names in mind. But, I would say that we don't necessarily need someone with Rebel ties that has expertise in Quarter Back play, and Football analysis on TV, and an uncanny ability to birth NFL caliber sons.

To me, since we evidently have the financial means to do a myriad of things, we need to find a qualified person (that would perhaps be the future AD) to head up our search for a new head coach. Even though I trust Archie to try diligently to find Nutt's replacement, I would rather someone with knowledge of the current game that has absolutely no affiliation with our great institution, and a broad understanding of the college landscape to take over the search.

Someone to take all things into account with focus on the whole picture. A proven personnel winner.

Again, I love me some Archie, but I just wish we'd take someone in that would make the right call based on absolute fact/analysis vs emotion of any type.

My fear is that if we don't do this, we end up becoming a sort of laughing stock. More than we are now, even. With the mishandling of Cut, the hiring and quick dismissal of both "O" and Nutt, Oxford could easily be a destination that no coach worth his salt would ever even consider.

Valid points but I disagree about the Cut firing that year. If Orgeron would have been brought in as a coordinator (I once heard a rumor that was Boone's original intentions. If Cut would've budged it would have made Boone a genius if true) and Cut had the same talent O had in the latter half of the decade, we'd have been to Atlanta by now. I believe the University probably is eating its own share of crow by bringing Archie in because someone higher up feels like he was right about the Cut situation all along.

To all who don't want to put the legend in this position, I see your side of things too. However, look how Archie muscled his son out of a *beep* market and into the number one football market professionally speaking? If he can handle deals like that, he can handle coaching deals in Oxford while we figure out who the new AD is going to be.

Archie still knows the game. The Mannings tent remains in the Grove every Saturday that I can remember, and even Eli tends to frequent the square on some Friday nights. His relevance remains, and his knowledge and connections are second to none available. Archie making the calls means some of the more expensive, less likely up until now hires could be made. I'm not saying this as gospel but don't be surprised if he grabs a Rob Ryan, Jon Gruden, Urban Meyer, etc. We did just save a *beep* ton of money on a coaching consultant firm.

I am ok with it. I think its important to remember that Archie was on CBS gameday with Tim Brando when he stated that Ole Miss would jump at the chance to hire Houston Nutt if he became available. So if you thought Nutt was a bad hire, Archie didn't.

Also, lots of rumors today that Archie is pushing for contact with Rich Rod. I like that idea, but I know alot of you don't like him. Anyway, most of us have demanded Boone and Nutt to go and that Archie lead the way out of this mess. Well, here it is.

But has someone already stated in another thread...be careful what you wish for. I'm very concerned we are about to have a real tough time finding anyone qualified who will take the job.

Coaches I am hearing are most likely don't excite me much: Larry Fedora and Hugh Freeze. They are good coaches, but they are not names or homeruns. In my opinion, if you are going to fire a man with 14 years SEC head coaching experience, you better hire a real homerun to replace him. Bama wouldn't take no for answer with Saban, and Arkansas didn't quit till they had Petrino. So we need to be banging on the doors and burning up the phones with:

Urban Meyer
Chip Kelly
Chris Peterson
Bill Bellichek
Bill Cower
John Gruden
Tony Dungy

Go get a winner. Don't settle. If we do, its more of the same and I for one am sick of Ole Miss tricking me into believing in her.
