My brother and I were discussing before the NC game began that LSU was in the same situation they were in during the results of the 1959 season. During the regular season, due to Billy Cannon's Unlikely Run, LSU prevailed 7-3, but they were not the better team. During the Sugar Bowl rematch, Ole Miss shut out LSU 21-0, but the game was not that close.

This year, 'Bama was definitely the better team but lost the regular season match due to some uncharacteristic kicking woes and a weird goal-line interception. And during the rematch, again in the Sugar Bowl, 'Bama prevailed 21-0, and the game was not that close. The only difference between what happened this year and in 1959 was that 'Bama got to win the NC because of it, while Ole Miss was voted runner-up to Syracuse.

I happen to think that the 1959 Rebels were the best team ever. (And not just the best Ole Miss team ever.)

I was thinking the same thing last night when BAMA missed the extra point.

Moral of the story: It's hard to beat the same team twice in the same season. If two teams meet twice for whatever reasons, best to win the last one.

P.S. If you can't win 'em both, that is.

Ole Miss 21 LSU 0, fifty two years ago in the 1960 Sugar Bowl. There is one big difference the 59 team did not let LSU cross the fifty.
