On Tuesday Alex Yarbrough signed to play pro ball with the Angels for a $302,000 signing bonus. On Wednesday he was named first team All American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Thursday he was in uniform in Cedar Rapids to play for the Kernels, the Angels Low-A Midwest League team. On the first pitch he saw as a professional baseball player, he hit a triple. He went 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs in the 8-0 Kernels romp.

Tuesday saw the Angels sign 14 of their 2012 draft picks. That makes 25 of 38 picks now in house. Perhaps the pressure is on the other 13. The Angels selected Alex Yarbrough in the fourth round. He was the second player they picked. They did not draft anyone in the first round or the second round. They had given those selections up for signing Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson. But they managed to draft Yarbrough out of Ole Miss (that is a college out there in America somewhere far from Anaheim) despite his gaudy batting average of .380 and his 29 multi-hit games.

Yarbrough plays second base in case you are hoping for a Howie Kendrick replacement this decade. Howie spent his off day photographing flamingos at Sea World. Don't believe me? Look at his photo blog. He doesn't hear the footsteps... not yet at least.
