Numer one reason why freeze would be a fail hire
Moderator: Rebel Security
If Kirby Smart were hired as our head coach, he would undoubtedly bring in some of the blue chip studs that we need. If Fedora were hired, he would bring in less talent, but he would bring in some dandy dozen top players in the state. If hugh Freeze were hired, he will bring in SUNBELT conference type players, because thats all he's been recruiting his entire head coaching career! This guy had no reason to even darken the doorway of a three star recruit, much less a 4 or 5 star! Because of the fact that Freeze would have had no contact what so ever with good recruits, when he is hired, he will have to start from scratch. The relationships these recruiters have with these blue chips take months to develop. Freeze doesn't have a prayer. IF Archie's goal was to petition for us to join Conference USA by making this hire, he did a d*** good job.

I'd like to toss out some pros and cons regarding the three men you mentioned in your post. Not that we can predict success or failure at this point. But rather than say that you are wrong (you may be right!), I'd just offer the following on Freeze, Fedora and Smart:
1) Freeze. Has turned around a mediocre program at best and won a championship, winning 10 games at a school that may never have had a 10-win season. While it may be true that he doesn't get the top-rated athletes, he has obviously coached up what he has. A coach who can do that is worth a lot these days. It is also true that he has won against Sun Belt competition, and the SEC is brutal. But he has won as a head coach and does not have experience limited to coordinator status--always a crapshoot.
2) Fedora. Has won a championship and 11 games at a school that has usually turned in six or seven-win seasons against mediocre competition in Conference-USA. Compiled this year's record against especially weak competition, with the exception of Virginia and Houston. Coaches at Southern have had the luxury of pointing towards two or three tough teams on their schedule, and there aren't such lulls in the SEC. Also: Fedora has inexplicably been unable to beat UAB the last three seasons, and that sort of slip-up will get you fired in the SEC. However, Fedora knows the state of Mississippi and should be able to recruit well.
3) Smart. Unlike the other two candidates, Smart has no head-coaching experience and has never won anything on his own. Football history is littered with coordinators who were 'trained' by winners and failed when they became head coaches. Most famous is Brad Scott to South Carolina from Florida State. However, there's also Mark Richt to prove the opposite. Does Smart just take orders from Saban? What would his offense be like? Would people be saying three years from now: "How did he win at Alabama?" Think that through before hiring, not after.
All of the above said, I will try my best to get behind whoever is hired and hope that it is the right one. We are at a critical juncture in time.

Not so sure that Kirby will bring in those blue chippers your talking about. Most of the good ones are being recruited by a guy named Jeremy Pruitt. And Freeze was the recruiting coordinator that laid the foundation for some of the best seasons we have seen in a long time. So Im sure hes recruited some good football players in his day.
Pain Dont HURT!
as I discount high school and NAIA experience as irrelevent to the job at hand, Freeze's experience consists of the following:
1) one year as an assistant coach at Ole Miss (not a coordinator, but a position coach-- TE I believe)
2) One year as head coach at Arkansas State
In summary, he has two years of experience, one as a tight end coach and one as head coach at one of the smaller programs in division one. Yes, Arkansas State has had a good year, but we just fired a coach with extensive experience as an assistant coach and a head coach at much more significant programs than Arkansas State and multiple good years. I will support whoever the hire is, but if it is Freeze, I am disappointed and have a hard time understanding why. That does not mean that he won't succeed, but there isn't anything on his resume that indicates that he has any idea how to compete at this level.

Agreed. I honestly didn't think Freeze was ever a serious candidate. I thought for sure we would stay as far away as possible from that state. Man I hope this is just a bad rumor, but I have a feeling its not...JustBlues wrote:as I discount high school and NAIA experience as irrelevent to the job at hand, Freeze's experience consists of the following:

Guys, the issue here I think is that all the top names had no interest. Lets face it, with our reputation right now and an AD that is being replaced (hopefully) by no later than December 2012, no top coaches are going to make a major change when they have no idea who their boss will be a little alone thinking Boone may stay before it is all over. We are in a position that Freeze is the only coach that has expressed any interest... Leach expressed interest early on but apparently Ole Miss had no interest in him. This is not a good hire and I fear Ole Miss will be back in the same position in 3-4 years looking for another coach and no one is going to want to touch us at that point.....

Best to leave it alone buddy...the glasses are on, the kool-aid is poured, and we are just party poopers.JustBlues wrote:While I wasn't counting Vaught as I did see his hirejeff967 wrote:do a little reading on this guys past coaching experience, John Howard VaughtThis is the least experienced coach I've ever seen hired to lead an SEC team.'m old but not that old), he was an assistant at a major college for 10 years prior to becoming a head coach at Ole Miss and he was promoted at Ole Miss, not brought in from outside. Times were different then, but even discounting that fact he still had a lot more experience than Freeze. I'm sure if you go back far enough you'll find less expereinced coaches, but in my lifetime I've never seen an SEC team hire a coach with less experience than Freeze. (by the way, I didn't have to do any research as I am very familiar with Coach Vaught as a long time Ole Miss fan). Freeze MAY end up being as successful, but it still is an overly risky hire. We just don't know what we'll see. he has no resume to speak of.

Let's face it! There was absolutely no reason to wait until after the BCS rankings were released to announce Freeze as our coach. That means the top two choices turned down the job.
I just can't swallow that our "Diamond in the rough" was hiding as an Ed Orgeron assistant during the previously worst coaching tenure in Rebel history.
That said, Freeze loves Ole Miss and wanted the job. He was in my top ten list of realustic head coaching candidates.
