Former Ole Miss football standout Riley Myers died in a tree cutting accident Monday in Simpson County near Magee, Miss.

For two seasons of his Ole Miss career, Myers was a top target for legendary quarterback Archie Manning. All told, Myers caught 74 passes for 898 yards and nine touchdowns as a Rebel. As a senior, he finished fifth in the SEC with 29 receptions for 439 yards.
According to the Greenwood (Miss.) Commonwealth newspaper, Myers was killed at approximately 11 a.m. Monday morning. He was attempting to cut a limb from a large tree, when part of that tree fell on him, per Simpson County coroner Terry Tutor.

Myers had been a successful high school football coach at Pillow Academy in Greenwood. He left Pillow Academy in 2005 after 13 years at the school. He led the Mustangs to an 11-1 record in 1999 and a state championship.

"Riley Myers was the kind of coach who made such a positive impact on so many of us," Scott Goldberg, a senior on the 1999 Pillow Academy squad, told the Greenwood Commonwealth. "He taught us football, but more importantly, life lessons we still use."

Pillow Academy qualified for the state playoffs four of Myers' six years at the helm of the varsity program, winning three North AAA titles. Prior to assuming the head high school job at Pillow, he served as its junior high head coach.

Heck of a guy, my father in law's best friend (who was with him when he died). He will be missed, as he made an impact on a lot of people.
