The academic saga of Ole Miss football player Jerrell Powe continues for the third straight summer, with coach Houston Nutt saying he hopes to have word on Powe's eligibility status within "three or four weeks."
The NCAA allowed Powe, a defensive tackle from Waynesboro, to attend classes at Ole Miss this year and receive financial aid. However, he was not allowed to play in games or practice with the team.
If his schoolwork this year meets the minimum qualifications, the NCAA will likely rule him eligible. However, the Southeastern Conference also must approve Powe's academic progress before he is eligible, and those standards have been left vague.
Ole Miss held final exams over the past week and grades will be finalized during the middle of the coming week. Nutt said the university planned to present Powe's progress to the SEC soon after those results were announced.
Strong struggling
Ole Miss defensive tackle Chris Strong, who was The Clarion-Ledger's Mr. Football out of South Panola in 2006, is struggling with his grades, according to his mother Brenda.
"He thought about leaving, but now he's back trying to work things out," Brenda Strong said.
Nutt would not comment on Strong's academic standing, instead saying he wanted to wait for grades to be released later this week.
Strong struggled with his weight and his performance during his freshman year, playing sparingly at linebacker and defensive line.
Lynn extends record mark
Pitcher Lance Lynn had 11 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings during the Rebels' 7-6 victory over Auburn on Friday at Oxford-University Stadium.
