I was reading this article and saw where Casey D!ck was the #13 overall dual-threat QB that year. If you ask me, that's not a bad recruiting job. I know he ended up not being that great, but neither did Robert Lane, Michael Spurlock, and Schaeffer. On paper, those guys looked like gold.

So exactly what was it about Nutt's recruiting that stunk so bad?

2005 Casey "That other QB from Arkansas" 3-star all-purpose
2004 Alex Mortensen 3-star pro-style
2003 Robert Johnson 4-star all-purpose
2002 Cedric Washington 4-star all-purpose

The Arkansas argument is that Nutt can't develop a quarterback. I have a difficult time disagreeing, but you have to start with some decent clay before you can create a good mold. There is no disagreement that Cutcliffe was and is a great developer of quarterbacks. However, even Cutcliffe couldn't work miracles with Spurlock, Flatt, and Lane. Spurlock and Lane were both highly regarded all-purpose QBs coming out of HS.

I am happy we have Jevan and hope we can continue to recruit and develop new QBs. Kent Austin may have a great influence on Ole Miss QB development. We will see as time goes on.

Name one QB not named Manning with whom Cutcliffe had success? He sure as hell didn't develop them.

Cutcliffe was good at recruiting Mannings.

Shuler was a good college QB but couldn't keep Frerotte from taking his job and was out od the league in about 4 years. Clint Stoerner had as much to do with Tennessee's title as Martin did.

Shuler is a Democratic Congressman from Western North Carolina. Drafted by the Skins, he was dropped after being given every chance. Martin, I don't think, every played in the NFL.

Parrot is right. Cutcliff's only successful QB's in the NFL are named Manning.

That's how he got the Ole Miss job.

We'll have to wait see how many Blue Devil QB's go to the league in the coming years.

Martin is a media type on CSS. At least that is where I last saw him this past college football season. Cutcliffe has made the QB's in his charge better that weren't named Manning. The one's named Manning just made him look better.

It is not a college coach's job to develop a QB for the NFL. He did coach Tee Martin into a National Championship. His W-L record speaks well for him as a QB coach/Offensive Coordinator/ and Head Coach.

He will turn Duke into a respectable program and I wish him well....

Having said that I do sincerely hope that Coach Nutt replaces Coach Cut as the most successful HC at Ole Miss post-Vaught.

Not that it matters any, but, I am in a pro Cutcliffe camp. I would thank him for what he did at Ole Miss, and wish him well at Duke.

Where as, on the flipside, if I even cross paths with Billy Brewer, I'll smack him in the face-hard, for what he did.

Cut disobeyed his Boss, Brewer almost cost us a program.

I've criticized Cut as much as anyone. But it's obvious the caliber OC he is when he wasn't at Tenn. When he came to Ole Miss, you could see the Tenn Offense start to unravel. He went back and the O got better. He left last year and you saw that Tenn Offense. It was pretty bad. Especially at QB.

Cut was/is a great OC. But nothing anyone says will convince me he is or can be a great head coach.

I couldn't agree more with what you've said about Brewer. All he did was what he was basically forced to do. He probably did more with less than any coach in Ole Miss history and he dug us out of the post-Vaught hole we were in. And, in my opinion, set the stage for the success enjoyed by Tubberville, Cutcliffe, and Nutt. But when it was all said and done, he became a scapegoat for Ole Miss. R. Gerald was a piece of garbage for not having anything remotely resembling testicles and fighting the NCAA tooth and nail like every other school under investigation did at the time and still does.

Cutcliffe was the right man for the right time at Ole Miss. I never felt like he had a team ready to play early in the season while he was here, but he did a solid job. He was a calming influence INSTANTLY after TT left and that had a lot to do with our dismantling of TT in the Indy Bowl that year.

Archie made sure Cut got hired at Ole Miss. I wish Cut all the success in the worldat Duke, but it was time for him to go when we fired him. To bad we hired a psycho who refused to get better at coaching. I liked EO, but he spent all his time recruiting and (apparently) none of his time doing anything else.

Brewer is all Reb. I have nothing but good feelings for him. Turner thought he could get rid of Brewer [which he did] and then come save Ole Miss from the NCAA [which he didn't]. That's who u ought to knock the devil out of, Turner. No pnishment is too good for him. The weasle.

OKay fellas, I hear you all loud and clear, and will sound the reverse warning audio.

I was a kid when this took place and just recall the good folks (sarcasam abounding) at the NCAA threatening the death penalty to the Ole Miss football program. I remember Brewer being let go as a result.

I suppose, again as a child, without any other resources, I just assumed that Brewer had caused the problem. I know now and knew then that he was 100% Rebel and that fact likely caused him to falter, or, that was at least what I assumed.(and yes, I do know what assuming could do to a man)

However, just a question here.

As I recall, Ole Miss was awful before the arrival of Brewer (and I do realize that he, himself, had some pretty dismal seasons, too). But, I seem to remember some pretty darn decent Rebel teams under his watch as well.

So, the question is, if he was mostly innocent of all the charges against the program, why do you suppose he never got another shot to coach?
