The good news, our defense is S-I-C-K. The bad news is that the offensive line needs a lot of work. The o-line was dominated today by the defense, and not only on run blocking. Jevan had no time in the pocket, he would turn around off of play action and a d-lineman would be in his face. For the first time I even saw Nathan Stanley take off running (which he wasn’t bad at). The poor blocking on the o-line showed in the run game as the top 3 backs, Bolden, Davis, and Eason all had forgettable days. However Devin Thomas and Andre Sterling both showed speed and vision at times. Thomas had a 20 yard catch off of a swing pass that saw him cutting to the side line and getting up field quickly, he also had a half back draw up the middle where he danced around a few guys and broke it for a 20yard TD. Sterling had a very similar play where he made a few nice moves then turned on the jets for a 20 yard score. I’ve been really impressed with the play of Thomas and Sterling, im not saying they will start but they will certainly add quality depth.
There were a few drops from receivers but they were spread out, its not like one guy had a *beep* day. I guess the drop that stands out the most is when Breaux burnt McCgee with a skinny post but drops a gorgeous deep ball by Snead, it was a guaranteed TD. Shay continued to prove why he is the number one receiver on the team, he has such great body control in the air. A. Harris is good, but there’s still room for improvement. There was a deep ball thrown by Stanley that Harris didn’t adjust to well. He also had a TD from Stanley where Stanley showed good patience, waiting for the play to come to him instead of him trying to make something happen. Summers also a nice day with a TD catch from Jevan. Lucas continues to get a lot of reps and has shown good hands.
Stanley had a mixed day, as I’ve said all week he’s not there yet. No sooner than he would throw a gorgeous out route he would come back and over throw a HB swing pass. This kid is good, and I feel comfortable with him out there, when he is in I feel like we can score. I look forward to seeing him in some games this year. Jevan was just Jevan, he goes out there and gets it done. There was one deep ball where you could tell we miss Wallace, it was a deep ball down the right side that was barely over thrown to Summers. If Wallace was still here it would have been a TD.
As mentioned above the Defense is stout. The DB’s were everywhere. McGee started off the day with a pick 6. Jevan dropped back and tried to hit a hitch route but McGee read it early and took it 50 yards to the house. McGee had a tremendous day today and is really coming along nicely. The usual starters Vaugh, Green, Brown and Lewis all had a good day. Marshay has come so far in just a year, I think he will develop into a true leader on defense. I also have noted that Marcus Temple was in on a break up and is having a good spring. I was impressed with the play of Julian Whitehead, he’s coming a long nicely. For the first time this spring I noticed Brandon Sanders and I thought he had a few nice plays. Demarro Marr isn’t progressing as I would like, I was disappointed with him today. In fact he has been consistently bad all week. Derrick Herman is another young DB that has impressed me this week and had a fine day today. If you step back and look at our corners and safeties we have some great depth: Lewis sr, Brown jr, Green sr, Vaughn sr, Ingram jr, McGee jr, Temple jr, Whitehead rs-fr, Herman so, Sanders rs-fr, Mitchell rs-fr, Marr jr, and Wilson rs-fr. Add Hornsby and Barksdale if they make it and we begin to look stacked.
A few notes: Hornsby was observing practice and looked great, he was tall and built. He looked like he could come in right away and contribute. McCluster didn’t practice today but was walking around on the sidelines. Everything looked fine... but who knows. Jason Jones and Craig Drummond certainly look the part, they are HUGE. I didn’t watch them very closely but boy are they big. Gerald Harris had a drop in the end zone that was disappointing. I know I haven’t mentioned LB’s much.... they are good yall. The starting three, Trahan, Cornell, and Walker are nasty. We have two pretty solid backups with Brumfield and Jones(although unproven). However I believe a spot lays open for a freshman to come in and contribute, such as Shackelford, Marry, or maybe even Knight. Powe is having a great spring, hell the entire d-line is having a great spring.

Thanks for the great report. Anybody in particular stand out on the O-line? I've been hearing that Rishaw has been having a pretty good Spring. Any thoughts on Neely at LT?

Dex had a slightly sprained ankle I heard. Don't think it will keep him out more than a day or two.

It wasn't suppose to be live on the QB, more of a wrap up type of thing, but there were a few times when I remembered seeing Tapp on his ass. I'M telling you the D-line absolutely dominated. The QB's didn't have much time to throw so it wasn't uncommon to see them on their ass today.

I didn't watch the O-line much for individuals. I think Mtownrebel paid some attention to them though. I'm not sure its because our D line is so good or our O line is really that bad. But as of right now I'm a little worried. Especially if Massie doesn't make it. I know there is a lot of time from now until our first game. But there is some work to be done.

Hargraves % of getting kids qualified is very high. I'm confident he'll make it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the o-line b/c they are going against one of the top 3 or 4 defensive lines in the country, maybe even the best. Even if your o-line is a top 15 or whatever, well there is still an opportunity to get beat but still be able to hold their own against everyone else they play. They'll get better tho. Markuson, Nutt, and Decker do a great job, i've watched it for years.

I agree. The coaches will be up for the challenge.

I was kinda hoping they would forget about that childish, thuggish self-agrandizing crap...very Starkville-ish...

I wouldn'y worry about the OL yet...they are probably just experimenting to get the right mix...and for a change we know that they are going up against an SEC caliber DL in practice.

bro they're going up against a fricking NFL defensive line. Provided they can all stay qualified and healthy the rebels will smother everyone in the trenches this year. I honestly don't think we'll ever see much drop off there either under Nutt.

I think there will be some dropoff after this year, and then after the next, but we will still have a great defensive line.

Losing after 2009
DE Greg Hardy
DE Marcus Tillman
DE Emmanuel Stephens

Losing after 2010
DT Ted Laurent
DT Lawon Scott
DE Kentrell Lockett
DT Jerrell Powe (If he doesn't apply for 6th year)

But, we have some really good looking young guys that should emerge in the coming years:

DT Justin Smith
DE Gerald Rivers
DE Craig Drummond
DT Corey Gaines
DE Alex Williams
DE Cameron Whigham (project player [my guess])
DE Mike Thomas (might be an OL, also might grayshirt)

Also, MS is stacked with DL for the 2010 Recruiting year:

DT Carlton Martin
DE Kaleb Eulls
DE Carlos Thompson
DE Devin Clark
DT Bryon Bennett
DT James Carmon (JUCO)
DE Wayne Dorsey (JUCO)
DE Josh Tillman (JUCO)

Plus, there are a bunch of out-of-staters we've offered.

And some JUCOs in the near future:

DT Eric Smiley
DT Bo Tillman

Everybody wants to be a Landshark.

Didn't Nutt take Jerry and Daverin out for most of the scrimmage in order to give the younger guys some practice? If that's the case, then it would make sense that the OL struggled. I hope this is the case anyway.

True. But I like the landshark. I don't think I mentioned this but at the Cotton Bowl, I saw an Ole Miss fan walking out of the stadium with an inflatable shark. He went to the pond near the stadium and put it in the water and left it. I thought it was funny anyway. :hehe:
