Are we a Top 5 team?
Moderator: Rebel Security
There are points we could make for both sides. But, the fact of the matter is that it is still too early to tell. However, there are a couple of things you can take from these early victories as a good sign. I think one of those elements is the ability to close the game out, and never stop playing late in the game. Another thing is Freshman or new starter play. You have got to have the newcomers come in and play with a fire and intensity.

According to the polls, Yes. We'll find out soon enough, no sense in worrying about. The only thing I worry about is the weather in Madison. I plan to cookout Thursday Night in my own backyard tailgate.

Rankings in Sept are so weird. But, I think based on the standard's that have been used the last 5-10 years, I would say so. Obviously, thurs night will go a long way as to how good this OM team can be. But for now, OM is where they belong.tanichols wrote:There are points we could make for both sides. I could name 100+ teams that would trade places with us for just one week...and two of them are in Mississippi. We are top 5 until we lose. What else can we ask for?

Hold on, let me check....
I have it here somewhere....
There it is...

Well I'll be darn, looks like we are!

Dropped balls in the end zone and on wide open drags across the fifty are going to be few and far between once we start playing the SEC. We're number five and being number five means that you have to play like a number five...that's all I'm sayin.

The below link leads to a composite of all major polls, plus many lesser ones. As of this post, there are still a good many not yet reporting for this week, but last week is a good example of what the pollsters thought of Ole Miss across the board as of that time. 1/3 of the 47 polls included last week had Ole Miss rated outside the top 20 (including at least one highly respected pollster ((Sagarin who this week after the SE LA game dropped us from a #41 ranking to #60)). Last week, one pollster ranked us #58, another #57, another three ranked us #43, one at #42, one at #41, two at #32, one at 29 and one at 21. So, there were doubters out there last week and will be this week although many of those doubters are not heavyweight pollsters (for example, the one who has us at #46 this week has LSU #1----wonder if they have a bias??????).
To me, the point of all the above polls is that above all only the AP and USA/Today declare a recognized national champion besides the BCS Bowl winner (and one of those two polls automatically votes for that bowl winner if I'm not mistakened). If we win the games that count, neither Florida nor Alabama will stand in our way when the year is over. I'm a little concerned about a Texas vs. Penn State BCS Bowl matchup if both Bama and Florida fall because I know the power of the eastern press to get their way, but I'm just trusting the national polls to not leave us out to any significant degree, so we just need to tend to our business and prove our worth. I believe a victory over SEC powerhouses Bama and Florida and no other losses in the end would ensure us a place in the BCS national championship game despite those eastern sportswriters. Let's just take one game at a time, and we should be fine when the season is over if we tend to business as I think we have the talent to do.

Even though OM's non con schedule is weak at best, they still have a strong enough con schedule to get them in the NC game. You beat UF, LSU and Bama in the same season, you are a legit team.RichmondVAReb wrote:The below link leads to a composite of all major polls, plus many lesser ones. PSU played as bout as weak non con schedule as OM but, their conference schedule will not match OM's.
That all being said, without checking the history books, not sure anyone has run through Bama, LSU and FLA in the same season.

Right now you'd be hardpressed to name a top 5. I think everyone up there has some weaknesses including Florida having some questions at receiver. Texas has been sloppy. USC has alot of questions. Bama has made some mistakes and they have to have some degree of inexperience in 0-line and QB which will be exploited eventually. Ordinarily I'd say this Ole Miss team is no better than a top 12 but there is so much parity out there right now I don't see why not put them in the top 5. We'll know alot after the Bama game.tanichols wrote:There are points we could make for both sides. But, the fact of the matter is that it is still too early to tell. Of course! Why not?!? Should we turn down what the AP and coaches vote just because a few teams in front of us in the polls lost? Silly question.
