Five guys making a move in spring practice

OXFORD — Since spring football is only a few weeks long, we usually only hit the highlights with our main stories that appear in The Clarion-Ledger. But just like every spring, there’s guys who are making a move in the background who could play a role in the near future (except for one, but he’s got a good reason). Let’s take a look at five of them this morning.

Third-year Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is trying to build some depth this spring after losing several important players.

1. Mike Marry, linebacker: This 6-foot-2, 237 outside linebacker has moved directly onto the second team after joining the team back in December after greyshirting the first semester. He’s fast, strong and very smart (He was recruited by Duke as well) and become a favorite of DC Tyrone Nix very quickly. Marry is still a little young and raw, but he should play right away next season behind Allen Walker.

2. Cameron Whigham, defensive end: Just like Marry, Whigham was a greyshirt in the fall, and both players look like they were absolute steals. He’s 6-2 and 247 pounds, jumping right in on the second team partly because he’s talented and partly because the Rebels are very thin at DE behind Wayne Dorsey and Kentrell Lockett. Still, he’ll probably play some sort of role right away for this team.

3. Charles Sawyer, cornerback: This 5-foot-10, 172-pound freshman was redshirted last season, but the coaching staff always thought he had substantial talent. The starters next year will likely be senior Jeremy McGee and junior Marcus Temple, but Sawyer will probably force himself into the lineup at least part of the time. He’s physically good enough for the job, but the coaches are more impressed with his maturity on and off the field.

4. Z. Mason, tight end: Don’t get too excited just yet. This 6-foot-5, 267-pound tight end is still a project. But he’s looked much better this spring and has caught several passes during practice. He’s still behind sophomore Ferbia Allen (who’s improved a lot as well) and senior Reggie Hicks, but Mason has shown enough promise that he could carve himself a niche next fall.

5. Matt Hall, offensive tackle: DISCLAIMER: This 6-foot-9, 321-pounder is not eligible to play this fall after transferring from Arkansas, so don’t even worry about him until 2011. But it’s hard not to watch practice and notice No. 75, who is even a little bigger than Bobby Massie and Bradley Sowell. When he does become eligible, Hall should make the offensive line better immediately.

Is anybody else as worried about the offense as I am? Something just doesn't seem right.

I worry about it every time we get the ball. Did when Eli (and Archie) took the field.

Honestly, no. We can't be worse than we were under Coach O. And with this staff in place, I would be shocked if it was any where near that bad.

I know, I know. But seriously, taking a page from RebChuck, how can we be worse? There is alot of talent and although we don't have Dex, we got six other backs that can combine to produce the numbers he did. We may not be as good offensively as the two previous years overall, but we won't be as bad as we were under O. And the defense will be good enough to win games on their own. I don't think we'll win 9 again but I would be shocked if we aren't bowling.

Pick my ass up off the floor...we ALMOST agree!

I agree that we can't be worse than under O (obviously) and we probably shouldn't be expected to be as productive as Jevan's '08 offense. Where I only slightly disagree is that I also think we shouldn't be worse than Jevan's '09 offense, because I don't think Stanley will turn the ball over as much. And turnovers are a double edged sword. Not only do they hurt your offensive productivity..they often help the other team's offensive productivity (as most of Jevan's did in '09)...

Okay, now I am looking for reports that Hell has frozen over as Chucky38 has become a cockeyed optimist! 8O

It is the time for spring football. As we know it doesn't take too much time so one can see it whenever he is free or the other option is to watch highlights.Guy who is doing well could play major role in near future. I am little worried about their attack how they manage it will be interesting to see. Ability to pass the ball is always plus point.

Am I the only one who does not understand a single post this person has posted? Just curious.
