OXFORD — Since spring football is only a few weeks long, we usually only hit the highlights with our main stories that appear in The Clarion-Ledger. But just like every spring, there’s guys who are making a move in the background who could play a role in the near future (except for one, but he’s got a good reason). Let’s take a look at five of them this morning.
Third-year Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is trying to build some depth this spring after losing several important players.
1. Mike Marry, linebacker: This 6-foot-2, 237 outside linebacker has moved directly onto the second team after joining the team back in December after greyshirting the first semester. He’s fast, strong and very smart (He was recruited by Duke as well) and become a favorite of DC Tyrone Nix very quickly. Marry is still a little young and raw, but he should play right away next season behind Allen Walker.
2. Cameron Whigham, defensive end: Just like Marry, Whigham was a greyshirt in the fall, and both players look like they were absolute steals. He’s 6-2 and 247 pounds, jumping right in on the second team partly because he’s talented and partly because the Rebels are very thin at DE behind Wayne Dorsey and Kentrell Lockett. Still, he’ll probably play some sort of role right away for this team.
3. Charles Sawyer, cornerback: This 5-foot-10, 172-pound freshman was redshirted last season, but the coaching staff always thought he had substantial talent. The starters next year will likely be senior Jeremy McGee and junior Marcus Temple, but Sawyer will probably force himself into the lineup at least part of the time. He’s physically good enough for the job, but the coaches are more impressed with his maturity on and off the field.
4. Z. Mason, tight end: Don’t get too excited just yet. This 6-foot-5, 267-pound tight end is still a project. But he’s looked much better this spring and has caught several passes during practice. He’s still behind sophomore Ferbia Allen (who’s improved a lot as well) and senior Reggie Hicks, but Mason has shown enough promise that he could carve himself a niche next fall.
5. Matt Hall, offensive tackle: DISCLAIMER: This 6-foot-9, 321-pounder is not eligible to play this fall after transferring from Arkansas, so don’t even worry about him until 2011. But it’s hard not to watch practice and notice No. 75, who is even a little bigger than Bobby Massie and Bradley Sowell. When he does become eligible, Hall should make the offensive line better immediately.
