Does anybody else see parallels between the off-season hoopla around Arky and Mallett to last year's Rebels and Snead?

The press may turn out to be true, but that defense was horrible and Ryan will be coming off of an injury and no spring practice...

Not saying the hype is undeserved, just saying it feels "familiar" and it should be interesting to watch. BTW I still think if Jevan would have even played "competent" games against SC, Auburn and Bama...the hype might not have been that far off base. That to me is the difference... we needed Jevan not to lose games...I think Arky needs Ryan to actually win them.

I agree. Arkansas is the Ole Miss from last year. Maybe they will do what we couldn't, but I stand by my argument that a team in the SEC cannot win the conference without consistent top 10 talent.

Arkansas under Petrino reminds me ALOT of Ole Miss under Cutcliffe. Lotta offense, poor defense. They'll be fun to watch.

Mallett was exactly a 50% passer against SEC defenses last season. He did average 2 TDs per game in the SEC, but of his 16 against SEC competition, 10 were in 2 games (5 vs UGA, 5 vs MSU). He did put up big yardage in SEC games (274 per), but based on his completion %, that could be attributed to the system which involves a high volume of deep passes, which he of course fits into very well.

This is not to say he isn't a good-great QB, and won't be successful, but he hasn't been the lights out QB that analysts talk about against SEC competition.

Arky didn't play good defense and their offense was just mediocre (mediocre being generous) against the better defenses in the SEC. Their defense will have to be much improved from last year to have the season the media are expecting.

Parallels yes.......
I see Arkie being lights out offensively this coming season but they will not be able to stop anyone. These grand plans of a run at an SEC title will end quickly....mark it. The defense will be improved, but just a few knicks and bumps on defense will cause a small leaking defense to become a certifiable flood-pour in SEC play. Don't read anything into my feeling and opinion on this: Arkie is and will always hold my "secret fandom" (Yes, i am a closet hawg fan.) but i don't see the top to bottom defense that it takes to win the SEC or even the SEC-West. Its Bama's to lose.....again.

Nfl scouts say the only problem with mallet is he tends to let the ball sail now and then. He has no practice working on technique. Keep somebody center field cause it should be good for one int at least.

That REALLY parallels Snead from last year.

I saw something in newspapers.I think practice is more important than any thing when we talking about games.The defense was not good and i don't know whether there was any sharpness in the attack.We can only comment on the actual thing that happens only when they do, so just wait and watch whats going on there.

I see parellels in the preseason rank hype but not necessarily the offensive situation as a whole. Snead was working with too much inexperience at offensive tackle, Seniors on the line recruiter more for 1 technique, a below average receiving corp and a philosphy catered to run to set up pass without a break away back until McCluster emerged midway through the season. Mallett has 2 or 3 receivers that will probabaly land on NFL rosters, and a much more experienced offensive line recruited by the former coach. Mallett also has a coach that builds around pass to set up the run philosphy which means the protections and pass routes favor a passer but limit what you can do in short down situations or run game.


Mallett will likely put up much better passing numbers in 2010 than Snead in 09 and be drafted and drafted high, but the 2 teams will probabaly parellel in record, with Arkansas landing around 7-5 to 8-4 in regular season. The difference is, Arkansas coaching philsophy wants to win with offense and let scoring be their defense. Most staffs including ours doesn't believe in that.
