Good scrimmage today, offense and defense traded blows but I think the offense came away the winner.

Let's start with the most obvious, Melvin Harris has become a stud. He easily had a better day today than anyone else. At one point he turned a 10 yard hitch into a 60 yard TD by stiff arming two defenders. He also caught a 35 yard fade which required great concentration as johnny brown should have had the int but melvin when up and got it. He is going to be a difference maker this year.

I was worried coming into fall camp that we were too thin at WR, but after the last two weeks of fall camp I feel much better about things. With Summers, Breaux, Grandy, Harris, Logan, Sanders, Neat and Herman I think we have a group of guys that can make a difference and help out of QB.

Running Backs continued to look good, Jeff Scott is something special, he broke off a 30 yard td run on the first string defense. Brandon made a point to plow over defenders. Enrique doesn't look any different than any other years I think. Devin I think has another gear and broke off a few very nice runs.

Brishen Matthews continues to impress and laid some wood on Ja-Mes Logan. He is a hard hitting safety. I think he'll win the 4th safety spot.

Clarence Jackson played a lot today and looked good, I'm sure he'll be the 6th LB this year behind, Cornell, Walker, Kight, DT and Marry. Ralph didn't play much. Jackson physically looks better than Ralph.

Crawford looks raw, I know he is a play maker and will be a good corner for us eventually but he looked a little lost at times. But so did McGee, personally I think Temple and Sawyer are the best two corners on the team. I'm sure McGee will start out the season at the started but don't be surprised to see Charles starting by mid season. Marcus Temple is playing Nickel when we decide to go to that package.

All the receivers looked solid, the only meaningful drop I saw was from Herman. They were all catching the ball well. Sanders had a nice catch on the side line.

Mackey did not have a good day today. He looked uncomfortable and unsure of himself at times. He showed good arm strength and touch every now and then but overall I wasn't impressed with his outing. On the other hand Masoli and Nathan continued to impress. They both showed good touch and arm strength. We threw a lot of swing passes today. Stanley had a 25 yard scramble against the 1st team defense that went for a TD. I think Masoli will start but Nathan is a very, very good QB that has showed a lot of leadership and poise.

Carlos had a force fumble

Parker had a few good runs at RB showing he likes to run over people

DT had a great day today, obviously a vocal leader. He is all over the place

Rose had a good day kicking again.
Just a few observations

Few numbers from the scrimmage... Nathan Stanley was 10-of-11 passing for 117 yards and he also had a 20-yard rushing TD in redzone work
Jeremiah Masoli was 5-of-10 passing for 124 yards two touchdowns. Randall Mackey was 4-of-9 for 74 yards and 1 touchdown.

good report, Hottytoddyrebel! Thanks!
Here's another one from parrish
http://www.nems360.com/pages/insideolemisssports

5:45. Rebels stretching now. Nice crowd has filtered in and drifted to the shade.

- In the stretch lines it looks as though Jerrell Powe has regained his starting position. Coaches downplay the significance of the stretch line, but it means something, or they would make the changes.

- At center, greyshirt freshman Evan Swindall still first team, A.J. Hawkins second. Hawkins could be being groomed for that top reserve role. Could be Hawkins the first interior lineman off the bench, redshirt freshman Emmanuel McCray the first tackle.

- Terrell Grant second, freshman Brishen Matthews third in the free safety stretch line behind Fon Ingram. Coaches say they're looking for that “fourth” safety, but Ingram, juco transfer Damien Jackson and starting strong safety Johnny Brown could be the three interchangeable parts behind the corners.

- An estimated 4,000 in attendance at Meet the Rebels activities earlier today.

- Looks like freshmen Delvin Jones (DL) and Tony Grimes (DB) are on the field. They were cleared yesterday, so we're assuming they're the guys in shorts and shirts.

- Jones, No. 2, and Grimes, No. 24, have been confirmed.

- As the walk-on quarterbacks go, Evan Ingram is higher on the list than Witt Haggard, it appears. He gets more snaps. The awareness for the walk-ons increased greatly in the interim period when Raymond Cotton was gone and before the Jeremiah Masoli issue was settled.

- OK, here we go.

Starting with kickoff and kick receive. Grandy and Rodney Scott are the deep backs. First team unit with Ritter, then second team with Hankins. Returns aren't live. Looked like the only players on the first team kickoff unit who won't play key roles from the line of scrimmage were linebacker Brandon Sanders and DB Lekenwic Haynes.

- Ritter kicks to the 1, then gets a nice round of applause on his second try when he kicks to the end zone.

- The 5 o'clock shadows have provided a lot of shade. Nice crowd, and nobody's sitting in the sun.

- Three punts for Tyler Campbell, and they were all pretty average. He's had a great camp of booming kicks.

- 1s on 1s. Good on Good as Houston says.

Stanley got the first team offense to the 27 with a second and 1 and was sacked twice, both times by Shackelford.

Stanley went 5-for-5 for 43 yards but didn't reach the end zone. Rose hit 2-for-3 field goals from 42 yards.

- Masoli going against the second-team.

Masoli throws a 10-yard pass to Melvin Harris who slips two tackles and takes it 76 yards for a touchdown. The offense was backed up that far, because on a pass to Breaux that covered 62 yards and reached the 1, Breaux was called for offensive interference. On that play, pressure came from the middle, Masoli rolled left and found Breaux. Call could have gone either way. In the game it wouldn't stand up in stats, but I'll count it here for the purpose of evaluation. I've got Masoli at 3-for-4 for 142 yards, 1 TD right now.

- Third QB in is Evan Ingram, just like last week, not Randall Mackey. Nutt says this is inconsequential.

- Derrick Herman just fumbled, but the offense retains possession at the 30.

- Carlos Thompson just sacked Ingram to the ground. Ingram is not in the red no-contact jersey.

- Nice 13-yard run off the right side there for Nick Parker.

Parker just scored on a 1-yard run and had 36 yards on 4 carries on the drive. These are extremely rough stats.

- Masoli directs a scoring drive against the first-team defense, throwing a touchdown pass to Breaux on fourth-and-8 from the 22. Breaux beat Temple, Masoli pump-faked over the middle and threw to the corner.

- Houston may not make a strong comment on the QB race after this scrimmage. He may want to see the film. But Masoli is clearly better today. He looks looser, more confident. And he put the ball in the end zone twice, would have done it a third time if not for an offensive pass interference call.

- Randall Mackey's drive ends across the 50 with a Rodney Scott fumble. Mackey was 0-for-3 passing, not as sharp as he has been.

- Offense going from the 1-yard line out.

- A 94-yard drive that featured Stanley and Mackey netted no points.

- On a fresh set of downs Mackey moved the team and threw a 39-yard TD pass to Contartesi.

- Stanley came back on and directed two TD drives in situational play from the 20 going in. One TD came on Neat's 11-yard reverse, the other on Stanley's 25-yard scramble after a penalty.

ETA: also Chase chirped that Nutt says we will run a 2QB system this year and it is possible that Mackey may RS

ya think?.
for the rec dont think he'll rs Mackey either. we'll run a 2 qb system with spcl packages for Mackey and possibly all 3 together at times (would love to see this, please Nutt) and I would be 8O if Masoli isnt on the field more often then not

I'm the kind of guy who doesn't take the Butter Finger and toss it in my milkshake. That way, I get to enjoy the milkshake and still have a candy bar too enjoy later. It makes no sense to burn a year of Mackey's eligibility if we don't need to just for our entertainment

on a hot day that butterfinger can melt...or become stale, and sometimes that shake needs just a little something 8)

10 of 11 sounds like exactly what we need...let's hope that Stanley takes the majority of the snaps and Masoli AND Mackey come in for a little somethin somethin...but I want our running to come mostly from our RB's and our QB to manage the field and get our good athletes at RB and WR more involved and let them do the athletic stuff. That is SEC football
(see Alabama).

Given Stanley's numbers and stability in the scrimmages so far, it would be a crying shame (actually IMO a disgrace) if Stanley is not the starter and the continued leader of this team until and unless he gives some indication in game conditions that he is not the solid and stable choice to be that leader.

He said "bring it on" to the Masoli challenge and he has been the most stable and consistent of the QB's and in fact is improving...pretty hard to beat 10 for 11....

How Nutt handles this decision will speak volumes about the coach and the man he really is.

So... you're going to ignore Masoli's numbers thus far? He's been just as impressive as Stanley has IMO. It's a toss-up at this point--either way, I will completely agree with you that our QB situation has to have a more positive outlook with these guys as opposed to a returning Snead.

Stanley's numbers don't reflect the THREE Sacks he took Saturday, while Masolis reflect the throw aways. They are both doing great, but lets be real about Stanleys #'s

Both of their numbers look good, I just think Stanley's numbers are a little better (for instance 10 of 11 is better than 5 of 10 in my book) and I think a QB who is more likely to stay at home and get the rest of the team involved is going to be better for us as a team. But let's say it is a toss up....in that case shouldn't the guy who has been here get the nod over the guy that was brought in to replace his backup? That is I think as important as any decision HDN will make this year. Do you give the guy who already had the starting position and who is your future, and who by all accounts has not been outperformed this summer, the chance to prove it on the field or do you replace him. If I were a member of this team or a potential member of this team, that choice is going to interest me.

"Jeremiah Masoli, the guy just makes plays and especially under duress," Nutt said.

If I were on the team, I'd want the best player at every position on the field, not the player who had the best potential for next year. Maybe the best QB is NS or maybe the best QB is JM. Good day gentlemen.

I'd just like the player who's going to give us the best chance at a win, to play. This whole "tenure" talk is total bs. You have to "earn" the starting job that goes for both Stanley and Masoli.
