I am told that Duke offensive line coach Matt Luke will be joining Hugh Freeze's staff at Ole Miss. bit.ly/sbcB2K

Matt was a tough O-Lineman. I remember him playing hurt his senior year. He also had good leadership skills and a strong work ethic. If he comes here and brings all those qualities with him, I think it could be good hire.

He was a smart undersized offensive lineman. Little arrogant but a good guy. He is from Gulfport so maybe can lock down the coast. His brother is one of the toughest people I know

I think it would be a good hire. Having coached with Cut he will know how to coach pass blocking. Of course coming from Duke he is used to coaching self motivated intelligent young men. Hopefully we will recruit him some.
Not that it's an issue here, but wasn't he one of the post Cut coaches was bad mouthing the football program to recruits after he left?

If so he was certainly right. 8)JoeRebel wrote:Not that it's an issue here, but wasn't he one of the post Cut coaches was bad mouthing the football program to recruits after he left?

I am a bit ambivalent about this hire. Other than being an Ole Miss guy I am not sure he brings that much to the table. He was part of Cutcliffe's coaching staff that didn't recruit that well once they got Eli. Also it appears to be a bit of a step down in position as he is listed as Offensive Coordinator as well as running game coordinator and offensive line coach at Duke. Of course I would expect the real Offensive Coordinator at Duke is Cut. I am a little surprised he came back. I guess time does heal all wounds. He was quite vocal and anti Ole Miss a few years back. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Boone is on the way out. I don't know.

With the direction we have chosen to go I don't think we should expect to get any coaches from successful programs in decent conferences. That's just a reality. When we take a leap of faith and huge risk with the HC we will have to realize we will have to do the same with his staff. No proven assistant at the SEC level is going to come coach with a HC from the Sunbelt. We will either wind up looking like geniuses or idiots. I am hoping for genius. Had enough of the other.

I think people state that Tuberville's staff was one of the best staff and I don't remember that many big time program coaches coming in his first year. I think they worked out and Hugh Nall was the best line coach I have been around and he coached Matt so he knows what it takes to build a line. He was only a tight end coach when here with Cut in his first job. So I wouldn't relate Cut unsuccessful recruiting to him.

As I recall, Matt stayed on after Cutt for one season with Orgerons staff and any negative comments
stemmed from his issues with Crazy Ed .

Especially with the level of players we have right now. Our OL does not look deep OR talented. Luke has a HUGE task in front of him and he had better bring his big boy pants to work.
I find myself skeptical, but supportive. Come on Matty, buckle down and get this *beep* done baby...

We have two good centers. A really talented guard in Morris and some decent backup at guard. We have a really good right tackle (who looked unmotivated and played below his capabilities most of this year) and servicible backups at that position. We do not have a left tackle that has the footwork to go against SEC defensive ends. With the right coaching, we have the backbone of a decent line but really need to find a way to shore up the left tackle position either by knocking some corners off some diamonds in the rough (if we have any available) or by finding a left tackle somewhere out there.oxpatchreb wrote:JustBlues wrote:their run offense was 114 in the nation this year and they were average at best avoiding the sack.
