with the latest coaching carousel news, there are suddenly a lot of offensive coordinator vacancies at southeastern schools with lots of money to throw around. This is worrisome since we have yet to hire an offensive coordinator and now have some very serious competition in our shopping. With a very questionable defensive coordinator hire and a weak offensive line hire, it is difficult to maintain optimism. We really need a good offensive coordinator with SEC experience. I haven't heard any of the rumors concerning Frank Wilson coming as the offensive coordinator in a while so I assume that fell through. That would have been an awesome hire.

I thought the Frank Wilson talk died because it was already done...could be wrong.

Not trying to downplay the need for a good offensive co-ordinator, but we already have our playcaller, Freeze, so someone like Wilson or Porter who's a heckuva position coach/recruiter will be where we end up at OC I think.

I hope that Freeze is willing to have someone with SEC experience have a big say in the play calling or we will be in trouble.

Houston Nutt has SEC experience in play calling, and we know how that turned out. TOO BIG A SAY.

which just supports my point. The head coach having exclusive say or too large a say in play calling is rarely, if ever, a good idea and would be a particularly bad idea if said coach has practically no applicable experience as is the case with Freeze. We'll hope that he is smart enough to see that or we might find ourselves longing for the nutt years.

I agree with you to a point. My big issue is..... come game day give me one guy calling the plays, be it head coach or OC with input from other offensive assistants but for the love of first downs, stay out of the way during a drive. I can't help but think that a good bit of those delay of games and premature timeouts were HDN arguing with the playcaller(s) and trying to get his way or in the way during a drive. Somebody has to be the final word and it has to be done efficiently.

Well, just throwing a name out there, a guy who has SEC experience and is a heck of a Recruiter and a former head coach, what about Ron Zook, just throwing out a name, dont go off on it.

Hugh Freeze will call the plays & he is very good at it. He is very innovative & creative.

Heard we threw a weak offer at Frank but that could be rumor.

Hey Sean Payton and Andy Reid calls their own plays as do a lot of NFL coaches. So does Spurrier and Chip Kelly, and many others. Having an OC will be title only.

We need to hire a strength and conditioning coach first and since he is with the team the most he is the most important hire http://www.paullacoste.com/ this guy is a machine and will not settle.

he is good at it in high school, naia (which is very similar to high school) and sun belt. The offenses he has used in the past will not work in the SEC but perhaps he is smart enough to see that and adapt accordingly. However, as I've alread said it is rarely a good idea for the head coach to get too involved in play calling. I would feel much more comfortable if he hired an offensive coordinator with experience and an understanding of what it takes to keep the ball moving in the SEC.

isn't zook's experience primarly on the defensive side of the ball and on special teams?
