Why did Brett Farve NOT go to Ole Miss?

Hello Rebels. I come in peace. Hopefully our game on Saturday will be hard fought and injury free. Those of you coming to College Station will enjoy yourselves and be welcomed like family.
But I come here with an Ole Miss football history question. I like to learn the football history and about the special players (especially those who succeeded at the next level) from all the teams in our new conference. One such person from your state's absence stands out. I've always wondered why Bret Farve went to Southern Miss. I just assumed that he didn't follow college football growing up in some remote town. But recently, he's made comments about Peyton breaking his record and growing up idolizing Archie.

EVERYONE knows the Peyton Tennessee story. But no one talks about this.
Now we've missed out on players before too. TAMU-Kingsville has 3 times as many hall of famers as we do. But those players constantly have that chip on their shoulder and always talk about no being recruited. Farve has never mentioned it. All these factors make it seem like there's some story that no one's asked about.

If I am not mistaken, he ran an option offense in high school and rarely threw a pass. I don't think Ole Miss even offered him.

Good question. I have never thought about it. I will have to ask around and find out.

Favre was one of those diamonds in the rough that nobody recruited. The only offer he received was from Southern, and they offered him a scholly as a defensive back. No one really saw the potential there. As for Ole Miss, the program was recovering from one of the biggest hiring mistakes it ever made in Steve Sloan, who was replaced by Billy Brewer and was rebuilding Ole Miss in 1984 and 1985. Brewer had a good eye for recruits and was a tough coach, but there was simply no indication that Favre would be the phenom he turned out to be.
Sloan, by the BTW, was assumed to be a great coach because he had succeeded at Vandy and then Texas Tech before being hired by Ole Miss in 1978. Overlooked was the fact that his assistant staff had coaches like Bill Parcells, who did not come with him to Oxford.

also his hometown is less than 70-80 miles from Southern...I think he was just a hometown QB and it really never entered anyone's mind he was going to be great at the time.

Kind of wondering why Billy Brewer did not recruit for Favre was the type of hard nosed tough player that Brewer wanted on his team. Lots going on at that time and this "small town" player may not have been recognized for what he could become.

Nobody in the SEC recruited Favre. Just one of those things that happened.

This is correct. The offense Favre"s father ran in high school required Favre to throw hardly ever. USM was the biggest school to offer him. Nobody knew he had the kind of arm he ended up having.

What about Walter Payton or Jerry Rice? How did they end up at JSU and MVSU? I knew about how Favre ended up at Sourthern Miss., but never heard why the other two ended up where they did.

Not to sure about Jerry Rice, but as far as Walter Payton, remember he was a freshman in 1971.....integration was a very new thing in the SEC at that time. That is probably the main reason no SEC team offered, other than Kentucky (67) and Tennessee (68), no other SEC team had a black starter before 1970.
I believe I heard that he had accepted an offer from K-State, but later changed his mind and decided to go to J-State where his brother Eddie had attended.

Another factor to the not being recruited story was that Favre's high school could never beat their district rival. D'Iberville beat the brakes off of Hancock every year. Add to that Hancock didn't make past the first round during Favre's time and he was way under the radar.

yeah nobody thought he was that good. I also don't think some of his college antics would have been tolerated at Ole Miss either

The big one we missed was Marcus Dupree. Had he gone to Ole Miss he would have been happier, closer to home and had a better career

I think the O'Jays said it best.
