I watched every first down play and the results were telling.
In the first half we ran 14 1st down plays. We passed on 7 and ran on 7. Only 4 of those plays were successful. The Core reverse, a pass to Treadwell, a 10 yard Mathers run and a 7 yard Mathers run. 10 different times in a half that we didn't have the ball much we were in 2nd and long. All of the 1st down passes were drop back passes that we went vertical on. We have definitely gone away from the plays Huge Freeze called "running plays for us". The swing passes and the throws to a wideout when we have the 3 receiver "bunch" formation. In the first half we didn't have the ball much but we did tend to move it with at least some success when we did.
2nd half is a different story. Our defense adjusted and played MUCH better. The only success LSU had was the long drive in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately our offense went conservative and couldn't take advantage of several favorable situations our defense handed us.
In the second half we ran 13 1st down plays. 7 runs and 6 passes. That stat is misleading because the last 3 first down plays were late when we had no choice but to pass. When we had the run/pass option we ran it 7 and passed it 3. Also, 2 of the 1st down called passes ended up being runs because Bo had to scramble and run. So we actually only passed the ball 4 times on 1st down in the 2nd half. Only 2 1st down plays worked in the 2nd half. A pass to Core and a pass to Treadwell. All of the running plays were stymied completely. Despite the defense giving us good situations we constantly blew it by being in 2nd and long.
Despite all of this... Bo missed on several passes that he has been making in his sleep most of the year. There were 3 potential completions that he had excellent protection and a wide open receiver for a big gainer (maybe a TD) that he made very poor throws on.
Another observation... most of Bo's better passes were on roll outs or when he was flushed out of the pocket. In retrospect I think we should have called more roll outs.
So after watching this with emotion out of it I learned this. We were much more creative and successful on offense in the 1st half than I remembered. We didn't have it much but when we did we moved it fairly well. We should have scored more that 7 points.
In the 2nd half when our defense was stellar. 4 things lost the game for us. Bad luck, Deterrian having to go out on the critical 4th and 1 play was huge. Overly conservative playcalling. Poor execution. LSU is a good team that is very good at night in Baton Rouge. Despite the playcalling we had several opportunities to make easy plays that we didn't make. So, to say this was all coaching isn't right. To totally throw our QB under the bus isn't right. It was a combination of the 2 with a dose of bad luck and a very good opponent thrown in. AND... We still almost won!

This is fair. Although, I don't think ALL the blame should be placed on just Freeze and Bo. The OL was really bad, too.

Bo took himself mentally out of the game early by getting involved jawing with LSU players and fans...that's why I believe he missed a lot of passes he usually completes. Hope he's learned a lesson...rebeljim wrote:Saw this on another board.

U can't make cole slaw with weeds. Most of our oline isn't SEC material, so it is what it is. Another year or 2 and this won't be the case, but for now, well.....lewindha wrote:rebeljim wrote:Saw this on another board.

u can never judge a book by how it chews its food
I have no blame. Lsu plays hard nose football and played emotional for a coach who's son broke his leg and mom passed in the last 24 hours. Yes we could have over come that but nobody has their best day each day out. If a 10-7 loss at night in Death Valley that ended for us similar to how bama ended their game with us was our bad night then we are doing something right. Now that game would have knocked us out of the bcs but this ain't the bcs. Win out we are in. Elimination game with auburn is sat. I suggest we focus on sat night!!!
