$50 million base to the conference

$6 million to the conference for Alabama (Sugar Bowl – CFP semifinal)

$4 million to the conference for Ole Miss (Peach Bowl)

$27.5 million to the conference for Mississippi State (Orange Bowl)

Total: $87.5 million to the conference

Conference distribution model: For bowl games with receipts of $4,000,000 - $5,999,999, the participating team retains $1.475 million (Ole Miss), plus a travel allowance determined by SEC. For bowl games with receipts of $6 million or more, the participating team receives $2 million (Alabama and Mississippi State), plus a travel allowance determined by the SEC. If an SEC team makes it to the championship game, it receives another $2.1 million, plus travel allowance. The remainder of the revenue from these bowls is divided 15 ways – one share for each of the 14 SEC teams and one share for the conference office. There’s also a distribution method for bowls with lower payouts, but I’m not covering that here.

I am so out of touch with all of this and really do not know much about it at all but... why is the Orange Bowl so much more than the other 2 bowls? It is even significantly more than the Sugar Bowl... just curious. I also wonder why all teams get a share, if they want to distribute the money through the conference, why not just distribute evenly among those that were bowl eligible that season -- give you at least another incentive for making a bowl rather than sitting at home with a losing record and still getting something from your SEC brethren...

If the SEC had just divided up the bowl money with the teams that went bowling, where would our football program be right now? The only way we kept it going was through the money we got from the SEC. Back in the 80's when u had to have an X amount of women's sports programs to remain 1A in sports, no way we could've added enough women's programs to remain 1A. Therefore, we would be 1AA right now if not for the SEC and it's money. Yet so many refuse to pull for any other SEC school in the bowls, saying it hurts us when they win. Total BS.

the reason the orange bowl was paying so much more was because it wanted to be part of the NY6 bowls this year...before they weren't...it was kinda like they had to pay to be relevant..remember the checks are all made to the SEC... not to the school.

the reason the money is distributed inside the SEC like it is is because the SEC office agreed to this kind of split way back when moby "That other QB from Arkansas" was a minnow... it is a reason that we are the strongest conference top to bottom... since forever.

Wow, that is interesting. I was never a very big fan of sec teams but after watching their matches in year 2014, I think they are worth watching. Every single player seemed to be well trained and no team is less in comparison.

Jim- I hate to state the obvious, but while it might not "hurt us" when they win; it sure as hell doesn't help us financially. I appreciate your SEC loyalty, and if you want to pull for all the SEC teams in their Bowl games, more power to you! But if you're trying to say there is a financial reason for us to pull for all the other SEC teams in their Bowl games, you're dead wrong! The bowl payout is the same $$$ amount for the winner and the loser. I guess I'm just not getting the point you are trying to make with this statement:

Sure the money is the same win or lose. But, look how everyone is talking about the SEC not being as strong b/c the West lost so many bowl games. We start losing bowl games, people lose interest, and network money becomes less. Other networks may pick other games instead of SEC games. It matters. For perception, if nothing else.

We start losing bowl games, people lose interest, and network money becomes less. Other networks may pick other games instead of SEC games. It matters. For perception, if nothing else.

Thank u Eric. Also, top players want to play in the top conference, and we get some of those players. We could end up not getting interest in some players that want to play in the best conference. Read their interviews. They talk about how they want to play against the best. If the SEC is no longer the best, some of those players that would be coming here will go to another conference. And don't think this won't happen, cause it will.

To say the SEC was weak is not knowing what you are talking about. I am up hear in Indiana now and many hate the SEC because their beloved teams can't come close to the 7th team in the SECWest in most cases, much less the top team in the West. Yes, Ohio State won it but I can guarantee you the 2nd, 3rd, 4th teams in that conference couldn't handle the pressure of playing a top 10 team every week like the west does. Saw an early pre-season ranking of our conference and the analyst said the 7th team in the SEC West will probably finish 2015 in the top 20 - that is how strong this conference is. The recruits want exposure and the SEC is still tops and has the most exposure in all of America.
